Wolverhampton Wanderers won the League Cup against reigning European Cup holders Nottingham Forest on this day in 1980. Andy Gray scored the only goal of the game after minutes following a mix-up between Forest defender and goalkeeper Peter Shilton. The two collided on the edge of the Forest penalty area when neither knew what the other was doing with a through ball from Peter Daniel, giving Gray the opportunity to tap the ball into the empty net. This League Cup victory would be the highpoint of a very desperate decade for Wolves. Financial problems hit the club hard as they struggled to pay ..read more

I’m really excited about this interview as John is a current Premiership player. He has kindly taken some time to send me his answers between training sessions with Wolverhampton Wanderers ahead of the resumption of Premier League football. First of all, how have you been coping during lockdown? To be honest, I really enjoyed the unexpected time off. It was time with the family that myself and us as footballers would never get. At home, the kids were off school so it is probably the longest time we have ever spent together consecutively and as I said I really enjoyed it. What have you been do ..read more

The bumper crowd at Old Trafford for Grimsby’s 1939 FA Cup Semi-Final with Wolves Heroes – FA Cup teams of 1935/36 and 1938/39 Both of these teams reached the FA Cup Semi-Final and is the furthest that any Grimsby Town side have ever got in their 142 year history. Jackie Bestall, Harry Betmead and goalkeeper George Tweedy also became the first (and so far only) Grimsby players to get capped by England.  They all only got one cap between 1935 and 1937. Grimsby lost 1-0 to eventual winners Arsenal in the 1935/36 semi-final at Huddersfield Town’s Leeds Road.  The semi-final three years ..read more

Sir Jack Hayward bought Wolverhampton Wanderers on this day back in 1990. The boyhood Wolves fan paid £2.1 million to buy the club. The club had fallen on hard times in the 1980’s and were even relegated to the Fourth Division in 1986. The situation became bleaker still that year when the club nearly went out of business. A deal was made with various investors and the local council but Wolves’ future was still in the balance until Hayward stepped in and took control. When Haywood became chairman, the club’s Molineux stadium was in a real state of disrepair. Two sides of the ground had been cl ..read more

Good – home shirt 1951 – 56 It was when researching the Wolves home shirts that I stumbled upon a bit of fascinating trivia. It made me want to put this shirt in to the ‘Good’ section straight away! This shirt was worn in the second half of Wolves’s illustrious friendlies under the new floodlights at Molineux and was yellow, not their usual gold and black. The reason was that it was easier to see. I’m just really disappointed that I can’t find a colour photo of the shirt. It was such a simple idea and a lovely quirky bit of football trivia! Bad – home shirt 1996 – 98 The only reason that I h ..read more
