Sadio Mane scored the fastest hat-trick in Premier League history on this day in 2015. It came in a 6-1 win over Aston Villa at St Mary’s Mane was playing for Southampton at the time and scored three past Aston Villa in just two minutes and 56 seconds. His first came after he broke free of the Villa defence and after a lucky bounce off the onrushing Shay Given, he tapped into an open goal. His second came after a defensive mix-up and for the second time in a minute, the Southampton forward had the simple task of scoring in an open goal. A minute later, Mane completed his hat-trick with a plac ..read more

It was on this day in 1979 that Alan Ball made history by becoming the first player to make 100 Football League appearances for four different clubs. Ball was playing for Southampton away to Coventry City and The Saints lost the match 4-0. He played in every league match for his club over the course of the season. Prior to joining Southampton, Ball had reached a century of League appearances for Blackpool, Everton and Arsenal. Alan Ball is probably best known for his man-of-the-match performance in the 1966 World Cup Final as he helped England beat West Germany 4-2. His only other major honou ..read more

This week’s Greatest Goal is probably one of the greatest team goals scored in the 1980s. Not only was it a fine passing goal involving seven Southampton players, but the fact it was scored against Liverpool, the decade’s most successful side. Southampton manager Lawrie McMenemy was building a successful team down at The Dell and had brought in some experienced players to the club. Kevin Keegan was tempted back to England from Hamburg after twice winning the Ballon D’Or and World Cup winner Alan Ball was also a first-team regular. Mick Channon, who finished off this wonderful goal was back at ..read more

Post-match interviews with managers can be great viewing. The result is a significant factor in how the interview pans out. The most entertaining interviews for me have to be when they are angry after a defeat. Everyone remembers Kevin Keegan’s “I would love it!” interview after his Newcastle United side drew away to Nottingham Forest in their penultimate league match in 1996. Keegan had been wound up by comments that Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson had made an chose the post-match interview with Sky Sports presenter Richard Keys to vent his spleen. It made for excellent television. In t ..read more

Dennis Bergkamp joined Arsenal in June 1995 for the sum of £7.5 million. He became one of Bruce Rioch’s first signings, breaking the club’s transfer record in the process. The Dutchman had performed incredibly for Ajax and for his national team. Inter Milan came in and signed him in 1993, but he struggled with the style of play in Serie A and wasn’t played in his favoured position. When Bergkamp joined Arsenal, he came in at a crucial time in the club’s modern history. George Graham had left the club in shame at the beginning of the year and Paul Merson had also gone into rehab for drug use a ..read more

Southampton hosted Queens Park Rangers at St Marys in the Premier League on this day in 2013. There was nothing particularly special about the game itself, but more to do with both of the team’s managers. The notable thing about the day was that it was both manager’s birthday! Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino turned 40 and QPR boss Harry Redknapp was celebrating his 66th birthday. The game itself ended 2-1 to the visitors, with Loic Remy and Jay Bothroyd grabbing the goals. Gaston Ramirez scored Southampton’s only goal of the game. Arsenal manager opened his chequebook in September 1991 and signed Crystal Palace striker Ian Wright for a then-club record £2.5 million. Wright was told by Graham to expect a long wait on the substitutes bench as the club already had a few striking options in Kevin Campbell, Paul Merson and Alan Smith, winner of the golden boot in the previous season. Arsenal had also won the league championship the previous season and for many at the time, Wright seemed to be quite a strange signing to make. As it turned out, the former Palace striker would turn out to be one of the best that Graham ever si ..read more

This week’s ‘Greatest Hat-Trick’ comes from Matt Le Tissier for Southampton at home to Norwich on 27th February 1990. LeTissier was best known for his great skill and the wonderful goals that he scored for Southampton over the course of his career. The South Coast side was the only club that he ever played for, despite interest from bigger clubs. Another thing that the Southampton forward is known for is his incredible penalty scoring record. He scored 47 penalties in his sixteen years at Southampton and only missed one, which was saved by Nottingham Forest’s Mark Crossley. I found this hat-t ..read more

Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny’s year started badly on this day back in 2015. His Arsenal side lost 2-0 and he was at fault for both Southampton’s goals and picked up a £20,000 fine! Sadio Mane opened the scoring after 34 minutes. The Senegalese forward chased after a long ball down the right wing and managed to outmuscle Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny. Szczesny came rushing out of his goal to try and get to the ball but Mane got to the ball first. The goalkeeper started to run back to his goal but Mane chipped it over him and past Per Mertesacker who ran back to cover for Szczesny ..read more
