ARSENAL bounced back from their bad December with an emphatic 5-0 victory against struggling Crystal Palace at the Emirates. The Gunners had won just once in five league games before meeting Palace and had tumbled out of the FA Cup at home to Liverpool. Palace fell behind early on thanks to a Gabriel header and goalkeeper Dean Henderson was credited with an own goal on 37 minutes. Trossard added a third on 59 minutes and the scoring ended in added time with a brace from Martinelli. Palace’s fans were less than happy and towards the end of the game, a series of banners were raised among the tra ..read more

THE GUARDIAN list of the top 100 women footballers has been released and unsurprisingly, Spain’s Aitana Bonmati was at the top. Bonmati, 25, was considered the best player by 102 of the 112 judges, making her the overwhelming number one. Bonmati was the outstanding performer in the World Cup, scoring the winning goal, and was pivotal in Barcelona’s UEFA Champions League success in 2023 She was one of 15 Barcelona players in the top 100. Lyon had 10 players in the list and Chelsea eight. Second place in the voting was Chelsea and Australia’s Sam Kerr. England also featured prominently in the to ..read more

London football boy – Terry Venables

HE MAY not have been everyone’s cup of tea, but it was quite hard to dislike Terry Venables. He was your original London football man: a snappy dresser, street-wise, innovative, flashy, eclectic and, above all, quite a talent. In fact, at his best, he was an excellent player, one that always had his eye on creating something unusual on the field of play. There was also a bit of ego wrapped up in that cheeky, Eastender persona, a facet of his character that not everyone could deal with. His passing, at the age of 80, represents the end of one of football’s most colourful careers. Terry Venables ..read more

HOSTS New Zealand received a body blow to their FIFA Women’s World Cup hopes when they were beaten 1-0 by the Philippines in Auckland. The Philippines’ winner came with their first chance of the game in the 24thminute. In the other game in Group A, Switzerland and Norway drew 0-0, which meant the Norwegians are still without a goal and have one point from two games. The final games in the group are Norway v Philippines and New Zealand v Switzerland. There seems to be some discord in the Norway camp, with star winger Caroline Graham Hansen being left out of the starting line-up. She c ..read more

BRITAIN may be on the brink of a burgeoning economic crisis that is characterised by deteriorating infrastructure, neglected schools and hospitals and the rising cost of living, but the Premier League just carries on as if it is business as normal. While so many people are struggling to make ends meet, football at the highest level continues to extend the gap between itself and reality. Last summer it was Chelsea, this year Arsenal are spending big, about to secure their first £ 100 million player and paying more than £ 60 million for a forward who needed to move to rediscover his verve. Soccer City: London – cosmopolitan capital packed with clubs

THERE IS no other city in Europe that has such a density of top-flight clubs as London. The Premier League, in 2023-24, will include seven clubs from the UK capital, more than any other capital city across the continent. Admittedly, only three of the seven have ever been league champions, but in terms of support, financial power and influence, London has three of the “big six” in English football and has three clubs capable of drawing 60,000 people to their home games. All 12 of London’s clubs have appeared in the top flight at some stage, if you allow AFC Wimbledon the heritage of the origina ..read more

Finances show why Crystal Palace feared the drop

WHEN CRYSTAL PALACE sacked Patrick Vieira in March, there were a few raised eyebrows concerning the wisdom of their decision. Admittedly, Vieira’s team had gone through a 12-game spell without a win and were three points clear of the drop, but he was supposed to represent a brave new world for Palace.  Indeed, Steve Parish, in the financial statements for 2021-22, recalled that the club had “an exciting new manager and many new faces on the pitch” and that there was “definitely a feeling of positive change, optimism and energy surrounding the club.” But it all went wrong and with the rein ..read more
