Road to McClellan should be fine. Be prepared to stay or get up very late as often the aurora doesn't show till well after midnight. The one time I saw them (in Alaska), somebody staying up all night asked me if it would be okay to come wake me up if they showed, and I said sure. One other time I stayed up till 2, and they started at 3. Statistics: Posted by drm — Fri May 10, 2024 7:43 am ..read more

Thoughts on my Plan B (didn't have a Plan B until some folks on here recommended it, thank you). If Timberline Trail doesn't workout for some reason, I have laid out a Goat Rocks route. Day 1 Fly into Portland and drive up to Snowgrass Flat Trailhead (will camp at Chambers Lake campground, disperse camp or sleep in car). Day 2 Hike Trail 96 to PCT, head north for an approx. 7 - 7.5 mi. day. Plan to camp somewhere in the Old Snowy vicinity or near water nearby. Day 3 Hike PCT to Trail 79/78 to the Lost Lake area, 8+ mi.. Camp near Lost Lake, or near water nearby. Day 4 Hike Trail 78 to Trail 81 ..read more

NOAA has noted a large solar storm, and is predicting an unusually high chance of visible aurora this weekend. I'm planning on hiking out to a north facing viewpoint tomorrow night, if the forecast holds. Anyone have any recommendations? I'm thinking about a few spots in the Gifford Pinchot, to avoid artificial light and crowds (Larch Mountain, Stub Stewart, Crown Point, etc). I've heard McClellam viewpoint is good, but I can't tell whether or not the road is currently open. Hikeable locations (probably some snow) include Sedum Ridge, Sisters Rocks, and Silver Star. I'm going to wear out the ..read more

Hey, that looks familiar! My family is from an area of the Southern Appalachians stretching from Sand Mountain, in Alabama, over to the Smoky Mountains of Western North Carolina. I can't help with your lost poles but I have a question. I've been to Nestor Pk from the Buck Creek #1 TH but I'm not familiar with the Buck Creek Falls TH. Maps don't show a direct trail between Nestor and Buck Creek Falls. What was your route from Buck Creek Falls to Nestor Peak? When you turn off of 141 on Buck Creek Rd, you just stay on that road 3.5 miles, and there's a gravel lot on the left with some info, a picnic table and a toilet. That's what I call the Buck Creek Falls TH, maybe it's not the official name. The trail leaves from there, crosses Buck Creek on a bridge, then turns l ..read more

Absolutely amazing spread of beauty, that sounds like a truly epic/incredible trip, thank you for posting this! I find the different ecological footprint of that area of the Country vs. the PNW to be very interesting, the tree species, bushes, just the feel of the forest. I think every forest and eco system has its own unique footprint. Looks like you captured some of the highlight/noteworthy nature sections of that region of the Country. I find it inspiring since I've never been to any of those places, but some day! Statistics: Posted by TrailPerspective — Thu May 09, 2024 10:10 am ..read more

Classifieds • Scarpa Kailash Boots for sale

These boots are about 9 years old but have only been used 4-5 times since they are so heavy and sustained a torn patella tendon a few years ago. REI buyback wouldn't take them since they did not have the original insoles - I have Superfeet insoles in them which are also for sale. The boots are 11-2/3 USA, 45-1/2 European, excellent condition - see photos. After many attempts to get a response for new soles from Scarpa they finally called and said they had none - crazy. I'd like to sell them here rather than go to the local hiking shops since I've used this site for years. They can be picked ..read more
