It’s the gift giving season.
This can be both exciting and stressful. It can even be confusing and awkward. Have you ever received a gift and didn’t know what it was? You unwrap it, hold it up, and in less than a second you must decide if you are going to fake excitement or just ask “what is it?” Among adults this game is a bit trickier. It’s both harder to deceive them and, thanks to unwritten rules and expectations around gift-giving, more awkward to admit you don’t know what you’re holding. With three creative kids, I’m bound to find myself in situations saying, “I love it! What is it and ..read more

I have an addiction. I’ve struggled with it for a while and to be perfectly honest, I’m not currently fighting itstruggling. Not because I’ve conquered it or found freedom, but because I’ve resigned myself to the fact that it’s likely here to stay. I’m talking about my caffeine addiction, of course. Until a doctor tells me I need to cut back, I won’t. (And if I just never go to the doctor, then I’m in the clear! Right?)
Unlike most people in my stage of life – early 30s, parent of three, a pastor – I don’t like coffee. I’m one of the few people I know who doesn’t even like th ..read more

Let’s be honest; the screen time with our phones and other electronics has skyrocketed through the roof since the pandemic began.
Who’s to blame? You’re telling me it’s unsafe to go to work, and there is a show explaining the scandals and crimes of an underground tiger industry happening at the same time — how could I not spend the next six hours on my couch while orange and black strips light up my dim living room? And while the Tiger King phenomena occurred last year, binge-watching and media consumption have presented their issues for the Christian during this technological revolution.&nbs ..read more

A few weeks ago, I sat down to watch the cult classic horror film The Ring.
The very brief synopsis of the movie comes to us from IMDB, “a journalist must investigate a videotape which seems to cause the death of anyone one week after they view it.” Even though this is a movie that revolves around a VHS, it actually holds up pretty well. The aforementioned journalist, played by Naomi Watts, keeps a copy of the VHS in her house while investigating its origins and if it truly causes the death of those who watch it. This seems reasonable enough. However, she has a young son, and she wakes up one ..read more

“I know she wanted to fall in love. I just hope she fell in love with the right guy.”
I was looking at an acquaintance’s engagement photos on social media recently, and found myself thinking that very thought.
If you follow my blog posts or my relationship podcast, you’ll know that I’m not an fan of the philosophy that says there is “just one person” out there for each of us to marry. I don’t believe in finding “the one“, but I do believe that once you choose someone to marry – they become “the one“.
So, when I say “I hope she fell in love with the right guy”, I’m not referring to the theoreti ..read more
