Well, Boat's ready, food is ready and I am long over due for 5 days on my boat with my dog. 60 miles off grid cruising on the Ottawa River. Plan to beach or anchor off some small uninhabited islands at night. There will be some challenges with the river approaching flood level, strong currents, not much beach and strong gusty winds, but should be within reasonable limits for doggo and I. Boats ready, food is packed and I am more than ready. Boat is a 1986 Mistral 16 with Torqeedo 1103... 5 Day Mini Cruise on a Micro Cruiser ..read more

is it ok instead of fibreglassing and filling a 20mm x 20mm hole in deck if i use 3m 5200? I drilled this hole for a deck connector that was away from my mast by at least 2-3 ft.. now that i do not have a second switch panel in the mix of things. i want to put the new deck connector closer to the new switch panel that i have created. so again would 3m 5200 be ok to fill in this hole or am i gonna have to break down and buy fibreglass and resin and stuff ..read more

Accidentally added gasoline to our diesel tank

OK, OK. Before you really slap me upside the head: we gave our diesel jerry cans (yellow, says DIESEL on the side) to Pangas in Turtle Bay and told them we need DIESEL. But what they gave us was, of course, gasoline. We discovered this after our crew put about a gallon of gasoline into the tank. We have a 46-gallon tank. If we were in a marina, I'd just have a fuel polisher empty the tank. However, we're sitting at anchor in Cabo San Lucas and don't want to start the engine until we... accidentally added gasoline to our diesel tank ..read more

Filling deck holes (for cable glands) with epoxy - 403 or 407 hardener?

Hey - I need to fill some holes in my deck to re-install deck glands and protect the core. This is not for structural hardware - just cables passing through and the holes for the mounting screws holding the glands in place. I have a West Systems epoxy kit with 105 and 205 (it's still cold here in Denmark) and it also came with the 403 and 407 thickeners / fillers. My plan is to follow most of the guides including oversizing the holes wetting the balsa core with unthickened... Filling deck holes (for cable glands) with epoxy - 403 or 407 hardener ..read more

Organizing Breaker Panel for NMEA2000 systems - Suggestions?

I'm looking for some guidance on how best to run things from the circuit breaker panel for my newly installed electronics which are all part of a backbone. Each breaker is 15A, and I'm thinking I'd like to have it all (wind, depth/speed, auto-tiller, GPS antenna and Triton2 display, chartplotter) on an Instruments switch, though Chartplotter should probably be on it's own switch, since it's a big draw and isn't always needed. If I'm understanding this backbone properly, it only connects to... Organizing Breaker Panel for NMEA2000 systems - Suggestions ..read more

Protection from chafe

I'm looking for forum feedback on what adhesive to cover my shroud cotter pins with to prevent chafe on the jib. My standing rigging was replaced last year and I don't know what was gooped on the sharp ends of the pin. It should protect against chafe and the elements, but also remain easy to remove for future maintenance. Extra points for a solution that avoids me wasting an entire tube of 291 or something. Sailing from West Palm Beach FL to Port Jefferson NY

Hello, A close friend is buying a boat in West Palm Beach, Florida. His home port is Port Jefferson NY. I'm looking for advice and information for the trip north. The departure date will be early May (2 weeks or so). Let's assume the boat is in good condition, safe, fast, seaworthy, etc. Let's assume the crew (4-6) has significant sailing experience, including offshore racing and cruising. The fastest way would be to leave Lake Worth, get in the gulf stream and head north. Stay 50 nm east... Sailing from West Palm Beach FL to Port Jefferson NY ..read more
