I have some lights to mount in my engine room. My thinking is to glue some blocks to the engine room wall and mount the lights on the blocks.
The boat will be in salt water.
I am considering using wood blocks. I don't want to spend the money on teak. I have also considered plastic or PVC blocks, but this is also quite expensive.
What can I get away with that will last? I know about marine plywood. But will regular plywood be okay? How about with a coat of paint?
Would another wood be okay for this? With a coat of paint?

I noticed two vented exhaust loops for engines to stop back siphonage of water into the engine.
One is made from Marelon; it has a whistle when it sucks in air, i.e., starts to back siphon.
The other is made from bronze; it does not whistle and is more expensive.
Any thoughts on the pros and cons of each one?
Any experience with either of these ..read more

I have a Volvo MD7A.
Page 30 of the Volvo owner's manual says to, "Spray the components of the electrical system and all control components with anti-moisture spray."
A search online pulls up CRC heavy duty marine corrosion inhibitor AND anti-humidity spray for hair.
So...is the marine corrosion inhibitor what I want OR is there some other product ..read more

I have a Volvo MD7A.
1) Are new, old stock impellers from Volvo okay or does the neoprene wear out over time--with age? It is still in the original packaging.
OR, should I buy a newer manufactured impeller?
2) Are there any aftermarket impeller manufacturers to avoid ..read more

I'm looking at purchasing a new (used) sailboat and before I do that and dump a load of $$$ into a chart plotter and associated electronics, I just want to play around with some Android charting software. I go to Play Store and there are a ton of different apps. Can anyone recommend one that's actually totally free? :confused ..read more

Hello All
I am getting ready for the season and set out to do some clean up of previous patches that were done to the bottom of my keel that looked like they weren't in good shape.
While grinding out some of patched areas I notices water weeping out, and grinding a little further it became a steady drip.
The boat is an Island Packet IP38, it is a full keel, with encapsulated ballast.
I am looking for any suggestions for the best way to repair. I am concerned about the water dripping out because it seems like it will take a very long time to dry completely.
My current best idea for a plan is ..read more

That can be a treacherous inlet. Hope he is off by now.

The 40-foot sailboat is beached in St. Johns County at Anastasia State Park after getting stuck early Sunday morning. First Coast News spoke to the boat's owner, who said he was not hurt and that he sailed from Spain and was trying to stop in St. Augustine on his way to Maryland.
