Five Years Out: Katie’s Breast Cancer Milestone
Another Mother Runner

Five years later—so happy, healthy, and eternally grateful. by Katie Sznewajs I’ve been dreaming about this day for 1,826 days — ever since I found out I had breast cancer on June 24, 2016. We were in New York City for the first time since my young family had moved away a few years prior. We were so excited to take our three girls to all of our favorite places; show them their old school, our apartment building, grab an absurd amount of cookies from Levain, then head to the beach to see our good friends we missed so much. We were sitting in the park eating Magnolia cupcakes when the radiologis ..read more

Melissa’s Recovery: Laughter Is the Best Medicine
Another Mother Runner

by Melissa Theberge Step One: Keep laughing.  Step Two: When you’re done feeling sorry for yourself—and I do recommend a temporary visit to self-pitydom—return to Step One.  Is there really ever a good time to get a surgical procedure done on your right hip? I think not. But after a year of generally homebound life thanks to Covid, I’d say the season when things reopen and family and friends are suddenly on the move may be the scientifically proven *worst* time to have hip surgery.  An unhappy hip doesn’t care about a pandemic or a #motherrunner’s plans. Despite my best efforts ..read more

Father’s Day: It’s Complicated
Another Mother Runner
by Tish Hamilton

Tish's Father. And a bear. You would’ve loved my father. You weren’t his child. He was Father never Dad or (heaven forbid) Daddy, which sounds formal and pretentious on paper, but was actually meant as a facetious send-up of formality and pretension. His full name was Big Fat Father (BFF), which seemed hilarious in the 1960s and 70s, because while he had a pot belly, he was hardly what anyone would call “fat,” even then. He was a charmer who had problems with authority, rich people and anyone who said "irregardless." He wasn’t a rule breaker exactly, more like a rule bender. Between the hours ..read more

Friendly Reminder: It Doesn’t Have to Be Fun to Be Fun
Another Mother Runner

High school graduation—and we're off into new, fun territory. In 2018, my friend Katie and I did a little ditty of a race called Casco Bay Swim Run. You race in teams, and every team, of course, comes up with a catchy name. Our team name—#COBAMRS—was nothing compared my favorite one on the roster: It Doesn't Have to Be Fun to Be Fun. (Can I get an Amen, endurance athletes?) I've thrown that line out at AMR Retreats, on the podcast, and probably plenty of other places. And now I have adopted it as my official mantra of June 2021. I am stating this with as much official pomp and circumstance as ..read more
