Ultegra 6600 shifter shifts only when cable tension applied

I've recently picked up a 2007 Giant TCR C3 which is fitted with the Ultegra 6600 groupset. I bought it knowing that the shifters where not working well, but the previous owner had not riden it often, in fact not at all in the past3 years or so. I figured a simple flush and lub of the shifters would get them working again. The left was not working at all and the right was half working. It didn't always catch when shifting back down the cassette. I had to move the trigger slowly until I felt it catch, to fast and it wouldn't catch. I tried flushing them and this worked fine for the left shifter ..read more

Natural Wrist Position: Forward or Backward Sweep?
Bike Forums

Hello, I am putting together a project bike and was considering new bars vs recycling something off the shelf. I like flat tops (for comfort) and ran across the FSA Vision TriMax that has flat tops that are swept forward. The selling point is that this gives a more natural wrist position when on the tops. I am glad I kept looking because I later ran across some Look bars that have swept back tops for, you guessed it, a more natural wrist position. Is wrist position an individual physiological trait or is it pretty universal? If universal, what's truer, forward or backward swept tops? Thank you ..read more

Internal hub conversion on old italian steel (7sp / 126mm? dropout spacing)

Hi all I've got this brand forgotten to time 7 speed which I'm contemplating a 8 or 11 speed internal hub conversion on. I've already got it set up as a poor man's 1-by and seven gears are fine for the riding I do but the whole drivetrain is worn and aching. The web is flooded with internal hub discussion but I've not had success learning what options exist for older frames with unusual dropout spacing. I need to strip the wheel off to get a better measurement but believe its 125 or 126mm. [ I wanted to post a photo but apparently I need more posts first... stay tuned for that ..read more

Trek Domane size question
Bike Forums

I'm looking at purchasing a 2022 Trek Domane SL6. I'm 186cm tall with an 88.6cm inseam which is a 60cm frame according to Trek's size finder. People I've spoken to say I should be on a 58cm frame, but that's just by eyeballing me and not knowing my height and inseam. I've been riding a 2014 Trek Madone H2 in a 58cm frame for the past five years which I find comfortable enough, but that may just be because it's what I'm used to riding (I've never taken the time to get a proper bike fit or try other sizes). My local Trek dealer doesn't have any 58cm or 60cm Domanes in stock, nor can they order ..read more

Brand New Trek Clicks when Pedaling Hard

I have a Trek Domane AL 2 Disc, It’s brand new. When pedaling down on my right foot on the hardest gear, the bike will click. However, if I shift 3 times to an easier gear, it won’t click anymore. I have tried a different Trek Domane AL 2 disc from a different store location (same store company) and that bike also clicks on the hardest gear. I asked the store to make some adjustments, but they didn’t solve the problem. Any suggestions ..read more

Do Continental Gator Hardshell tires, offer good puncture resistance? I just bought a set of these thinking they must be exceptionally good at preventing flats, because they are Gators. Anyone here have experience with these tires? Can you share your opinion of these tires and their puncture resistance? These are Continental Gator Hardshell tires, not Gatorskins. Thank you in advance ..read more

Tell me all about goatheads

This winter keeps dragging on and I'm getting closer to making plans to drive south for a weekend of real outside cycling and it got me thinking about whether I might find goatheads wherever I go. To my knowledge, these little buggers do not exist in Minnesota. At least I haven’t seen one here anyway. My only encounter with one was while driving through western Kansas my daughter wanted to stop at a wheat field. I pulled into a farm driveway, she got out with bare feet, and promptly found one stuck to the bottom of her foot! So western Kansas, check. Tell me what other states they can be foun ..read more

During 2017 i finally took a pair of aero carbon wheelset that i was dreaming for years. Since then i used but not too much since when i bought i was thinking to start racing again and then for many reason i decided to postponed (due to covid situation i'm still not racing). I use mostly when i feel super trained or when i feel competitive with my group , but most of the time i prefer using my old tank wheels (campy khamshin) for training or in case we find a route that the road is not good. Now since the tubular seems becaming less popular , averyone is talking about tubeless and disks brake ..read more

New bike build log
Bike Forums

I thought I'd start a log on a new road bike I'm going to build. Kind of a crazy time to do this, it's already dicey to get parts, plus supply issues, and erratic pricing, etc... It doesn't look like this covid thing is going to sort itself out anytime soon, and parts may get harder to come by with the season coming up in a couple months so I went for it. Maybe I've been rooked on some pricing due to the current economy but at least I'll have a fresh bike for the upcoming season. This is just a place holder for now but I received the frame and wheels a couple days ago. I'm still waiting for th ..read more

Metallic vs resin disc pads
Bike Forums

I am sure this has been answered elsewhere but here I go. My road bike has metallic disc brake pads while my gravel bike has resin pads. No matter how well or how clean the metallic pads are they eventually squeal, mostly after a period of steady or modulated braking going down hills. Not until considerable squeak free braking has been done. The resin pads on the other hand are flawless. I know the pros and cons of each but it just seems I like the resin pads better. Any huge downside to putting resin pads in my road bike? Road is hydraulic Ultegra R 8000 or so, gravel is GRX hydraulic. Thanks ..read more
