Former Leeds United striker Matt Smith has broken the 20-goal barrier for the first time in his career with the one-time Elland Road talisman proving that age is but a number at Salford City.  League Two is home to a number of 30-something centre-forwards these days. But while Charlie Austin at Swindon Town and Steven Fletcher at Wrexham are certainly doing their bit to show that there is life left in the old dogs, Matt Smith appears to be ageing in reverse. Salford’s answer to Benjamin Button plundered two more typically predatory finishes during Saturday’s 5-3 thriller with Barrow.  ..read more

Tim Sherwood says Patrick Bamford should be ‘ashamed’ of himself after Asmir Begovic was wrongly sent off during Leeds United’s 1-0 win over QPR at Elland Road. In stoppage time, the on-field referee, David Webb, deemed that QPR goalkeeper Asmir Begovic took out Patrick Bamford as he tried to get the ball after being put through on goal. As a result, the former Everton man was issued a straight red card, but as Tim Sherwood put it, he ‘didn’t even touch’ the Leeds United man, as he told Soccer Special on Sky Sports (04/10/23 at 9:40 pm). There is no doubt that the red card will be overturned ..read more

Wolves, Sunderland and QPR looked at Anthony Barry recently and Thomas Tuchel has now confirmed that he hopes to lure the Chelsea coach away from the Premier League and to Bayern Munich.  Never afraid to speak his mind and never afraid to irritate, the fact that Julian Nagelsmann’s replacement managed to get his old employers’ backs up during his introducing press conference at the Allianz Arena was typical Tuchel, really.  Chelsea, Goal say, are ‘upset’ about the way the Champions League-winning boss is publicly courting a man who became one of his most trusted allies at Stamford Br ..read more

It’s easy to forget that, as recently as mid-October, Queens Park Rangers were sitting pretty at the summit of the Championship, the expert management of Mick Beale raising expectations of a return to the Promised Land.  Four months on, QPR are 18th; closer to the relegation zone than they are to the play-off places. We will never know how this season would have progressed had Beale opted to stay put in West London.   But, after Neil Critchley failed miserably to build upon the foundations he laid down, it’s no stretch to suggest that a collapse of this magnitude would have been avoi ..read more

With Queens Park Rangers in the midst of a miserable run of form, the last thing the under-fire Critchley needed was to see Michael Carrick’s brilliant Boro appear on the fixture list.  The Championship’s form side took their time at the Riverside. Wycombe Wanderers legend Adebayo Akinfenwa can understand why Gareth Ainsworth would be tempted to replace Neil Critchley at QPR but hopes to see him stay at Adams Park, speaking to talkSPORT (19 February, 7pm).  Saturday’s 1-0 triumph over Bolton Wanderers was Ainsworth’s Wycombe side to a tee. It wasn’t the most aesthetically pleasing game of the season but, what The Chairboys lack in style, they more than make up for in substance. In grit, desire, and endeavour.  Ainsworth guided Wycombe to promotion in 2020. He almost repeated the trick in 2022. And it’s testament to their rockab ..read more
