These items are from the Goodwill Bins.  Of course they are! An incredible crochet afghan.  It's big, fully covering a queen bed with length to spare.  The red ones make me think of poinsettias, which make me think of Christmas!   Another vintage copper mold, tin lined.  This is the third of these heavy vintage molds in copper.  The orange reflection is from Halloween lights (yes, this was written that long ago), and I think there is a warped me there too!   Two color lithographs from D.A.C. (Donald Art Co.) prints, distributed by Famous Paint ..read more

Nearly Wordless...  The past few nights have been below freezing.  The pyracantha looked especially pretty yesterday morning.  If I were doing anything special for Thanksgiving (that is, having company and making a centerpiece) I'd use some of the berries.  Growing up it was one of my favorite holiday jobs, going around the yard and clipping leaves and berries.  Our pyracantha was red.  I don't see that much here.   I thought this was pretty much the perfect leaf!  It's from next door.   That's it for today, as I have a ne ..read more

Shadow Shot Sunday  A few weeks ago this spider shadow appeared on my bedroom door!  Not to worry, it was just a shadow from a Halloween decoration spider in the front door window.   Speaking of creepy-crawlies, a few mornings ago my son told me, "There's one of those bugs you hate on the window."  I immediately asked, "Inside or out?"  Fortunately out, since it was one of the bugs I hate, a true bug.  I couldn't tell what kind from underneath. I moved the Christmas totes out of the shed and found this mud dauber wasp nest.  It's flatter than o ..read more

Garden Bloggers' Day for November 2023. After a few nights below freezing, temperatures are up a bit.  The garden is mostly quite tattered and sad though.  Taken individually they look fine! California poppies, Moonshine yarrow, a Thanksgiving cactus in bud, and Persian catmint There are still some nice calendulas!  Three kinds of rosemary.  Right is Blue Boy, a dwarf.  Left top is Tuscan Blue, the bottom prostrate. The same alyssum clump as last month.  A few Angel Shasta daisies, and one Japanese anemone.  The earlier buds are hanging limp from t ..read more

I found a fabulous monotype at Goodwill recently.  It's signed in pencil, but I can't make out the signature.  It's called, at least as far as I can make out, "Turquoise Memories."  It's printed on black paper, and the signature and title are in the black bottom margin.   A monotype is a kind of print where the artist creates just one print that cannot be replicated, rather than multiples (numbered editions).  A monotype is made with ink or paint applied directly onto the plate (glass, metal, etc.)  The paper is then pressed by hand or with a printing press ..read more

Thursday Thirteen, a random bunch. I have a little plum tree sucker plum that has the prettiest autumn color, nearly pink.   Guinevere oversees sunrise in the Herb Garden.  Double Dynasty dianthus doesn't mind the frost.  The knautia doesn't either, but there are probably 95% fewer flowers than in late spring.  Frost tips the hardy germanium leaves. And the strawberries.  This is Hood, which has decided to crawl out of its bed and all over the Toss Garden.  I didn't notice its spread until I cut back the black-eyed Susans.   ..read more
