Arsenal secured their first league title in seventeen years on this day back in 1971, thereby completing the first leg of their attempt to win a League and Cup Double. Liverpool lay in wait for the FA Cup Final five days later, but first Arsenal needed to go to White Hart Lane to play their bitter rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the final game of the league season. Leeds United had been Arsenal’s main challengers throughout the season and were a point ahead at the top of the table. The Yorkshire side had beaten them 1-0 the week before and would win the title if Arsenal lost or on goal average if ..read more

This week’s ‘Greatest Goal’ comes from Leeds United’s Rod Wallace in the second Premier League season. It won the Match of the Day ‘Goal of the Season’ award and was a fine solo goal. Wallace received the ball just over 30 yards from his own goal and began running at pace towards the Tottenham goal. Steve Sedgley was right behind Wallace and put him under enough pressure to force him wide towards the left touchline. Spurs’ right back Dean Austin blocked Wallace’s path forward but the Leeds striker found a gap between Austin and Sedgley and ran through it. He skipped over Austin’s left leg and ..read more

The North London Derby takes place in an hour’s time, so I thought that it was appropriate to include a hat-trick from a previous match between Arsenal and Tottenham for this week’s Greatest Hat-Trick. On 23rd December, Arsenal travelled down the Seven Sisters Road to face arch-rivals Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane. A victory would be the perfect early Christmas present for their fans. They would get the win they so desperately craved, but were definitely not expecting the emphatic scoreline. In one of the most one-sided North London derbies, Arsenal won 5-0, with Alan Sunderland scored ..read more

A record crowd of 75,038 crammed into White Hart Lane on this day in 1938 to watch Tottenham play Sunderland in the Sixth Round of the FA Cup. The large crowd may have been partly to do with the fact that Sunderland were the current FA Cup holders and Raich Carter was among their ranks. Carter was Sunderland’s captain at the time and was one of the best players to have ever played for the club. Sunderland were enjoying the most successful time in their history. They had won the First Division title in 1936 and followed this up with the FA Cup a season later. Raich Carter was the club captain ..read more

This week’s ‘Greatest Goal’ comes from Tottenham Hotspur’s Dele Alli in a league match away to Crystal Palace on 23rd January 2016. At the time, Alli was in his first full season at Tottenham, having joined the North London club from Milton Keynes Dons for £5 million the year before. He had caught the eye of many of the biggest names in English football, with Tottenham winning the race for his signature. After Tottenham signed Alli, they sent him back to MK Dons for the remainder of the 2014/15 season to get first-team experience. Suitably impressed with what they saw, Spurs put him straight ..read more

This week’s ‘Greatest Own Goal’ comes from Tottenham Hotspur’s Kieran Trippier. The midfielder famously scored a free-kick in England’s World Cup Semi-Final against Croatia three years ago, but this own goal is a moment he would rather forget! The own goal came in a league match away to Chelsea in February 2019. The hosts were already 1-0 up thanks to a goal from Spanish international Pedro and Trippier’s moment of embarrassment came in the 85th minute to give Chelsea all three points. Trippier chased back towards goal after a loose ball that was intended for Chelsea’s left winger Willian. Th ..read more

This week’s ‘Greatest Own Goal’ comes from the 1981 FA Cup Final between Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur. The unfortunate man to put through his own net was Manchester city midfielder Tommy Hutchison. Hutchison scored the opening goal of the game in the 30th minute, getting on the end of a Ray Ranson cross to thump a header past Milija Aleksic in the Tottenham goal. However, he would write his name in the record books in the second half when he deflected a Glenn Hoddle free-kick past his own goalkeeper. Three players stood over the ball, Ossie Ardiles, Steve Perryman, and Hodd ..read more

It was on this day in 1978 that Arsenal put five goals without reply against their bitter rivals Tottenham Hotspur. 42,073 fans were at White Hart Lane to see Arsenal match the second highest victory in the derby, a record that was held by Tottenham who beat Arsenal by the same scoreline on Christmas Day 1911. The record victory between the two clubs came on 6th March 1935, when Arsenal won 6-0. Alan Sunderland scored a hat-trick to cap a fine individual performance. Frank Stapleton and Liam Brady also got on the scoresheet, with Brady’s goal being a sensational curling effort from the edge o ..read more

It was on this day in 2000 that Tottenham defender Ledley King scored what was then the quickest goal in Premier League history. King’s goal was scored after 9.82 seconds in an away game at Bradford City that ended in a 3-3 draw. He was playing in a more advanced role in midfield, a position he played in before he moved back to central defence. King hammered home the opener after gaining possession about 40 yards from goal. He took the ball forward ten yards before smashing the ball low into the far corner of the net. Jamie Lawrence levelled the scores eight minutes later before Sol Campbell ..read more

Tottenham Hotspur became the first British club to win a European competition on this day in 1963 as they thumped Athletico Madrid 5-1 in Rotterdam to lift the European Cup Winners Cup. Jimmy Greaves opened the scoring after 16 minutes, volleying in a cross from Cliff Jones. John White then added Spurs’ second on 35 minutes with a powerful drive through a crowded penalty area. Enrique Collar scored from the penalty spot for Athletico two minutes after the restart. Terry Dyson scored a fluke third after his mishit cross dropped inside the near post. Dyson volleyed in his second to make it 4-1 ..read more
