It's not that unusual to get a few cold days and nights this time of year.   We are still subject to a frost anytime before Mothers day but come on....  Let's turn the heater up a notch or two.   The forecast for later next week may offer a few warmer days and that's what we need to promote recovery.   Even with these colder temps I am seeing some recovery.  Patience is key.     We have been busy this past week.   We finished planting all our Green Giant Arborvitaes yesterday.    Looking really good behind the ninth gr ..read more

Tomorrow is opening day.   Forecast is not too bad but we are expecting storms to roll through this evening.  Fingers crossed that we don't have anything too severe.  Course clean up is finished and we spent the last two weeks edging and preparing our bunkers for the season.    All bunkers have been edged and readied for play.   Bunker school,  We have been fortunate in being able to hire 9 new employees this  spring. There will be a huge learning curve that we will have to handle  this year but I'm excited for these men and l ..read more

A QUICK MARCH UPDATE:
Rockland Country Club
by Matt Ceplo

A good week considering we had some inclemente weather for a couple of days.   We continued our shop cleaning and painting and moved forward with our bathroom remodel.  Rain shelters have been updated.  Ceilings have been added and all damaged wood has been replaced.   When things warm up they will be pressure washed and stained.    Some typical March  weather. Morning  snow.   By the afternoon most  of it melted but the rest  of week it remained cold.   Snow last Friday night into  Saturday ..read more

Extra soil has been added along our parking lot to level this area for Green Giant Arborvitae shrubs. Behind 9, and 16 greens are ready.  Extra soil has been added behind 3 green.  Grass plants have been removed behind 7 green.  We still  have a couple of days prep work then we can start planting.  Plants are  coming from Middletown NY.  and last time I talked to the grower,  the ground was  still frozen.  As soon as it thaws they can dig them and we will start planting.   We will have nice hedge rows boarding our property.  &n ..read more

WINTER SHOWERS BRING...... MUD
Rockland Country Club

It's  been great to have some warmer days these past few weeks.   Most importantly all ice has melted from greens making winter damage less likely.  In between the raindrops work continues on preparing areas for our Green Giant Arborvitaes.   The area along 9w behind the 9th green is now prepared along with the area next to our parking lot.   The area behind 3 green will require hauling in some soil to add height.  The remaining areas will not require much work to prepare.  The nursery that is supplying the material is a little north and last I ..read more

1.3" RAIN YESTERDAY
Rockland Country Club

Heavy rain Thursday and Friday melted a lot of snow but turned what was left  to ice.    Work continued on preparing areas to plant our arborvitae hedges.  None more dramatic than 9.  Removing existing hedge really opens up views from the road not our intent but you can now visualize what the area will look like when the new hedge will replace the old overgrown one.  This will also increase the site line looking down 9W making it safer to cross this busy street to get to the range.   Removing overgrown hedge behind 9 green really opened up area.&n ..read more

JANUARY ENDS IN WHITE
Rockland Country Club

This week started off with a dusting of snow and ended Saturday dumping about six inches that has the course a nice puffy white.  In between snowflakes we had a good productive week  All be it on the cold side we continued our tree work.  Some tree safety issues were taken care of.  One tree needed to be removed because it potentially would fall on our shop.  Another one had a major dead leader that overhang the cart path behind 13 green.  We also continued to prepare a few areas to plant Green Giant Arborvitaes.  Adding a hedge along some of our perimeters w ..read more

A DESCENT WEEK ALL THINGS CONSIDERED.

The week started off with a rain-snow mix.  All total we had over one inch of precipitation.   Melted some of the snow but we still have some ice on greens.   Let the countdown begin.  We have 30 to 60 days before we start to worry about ice damage.   A few very cold mornings had us spending sometime  working inside performing winter service on our vehicles.   Afternoons we spent trimming trees and we had a great day hauling construction mix to our new tees on 9 and 3.    Ice on the 8th green.  Research shows that Poa can w ..read more

MID-JANUARY UPDATE
Rockland Country Club

We dodged a bullet last night.  We could have gotten a big winter storm but instead it ended up being a big rain event.   With over and inch of rain on a frozen course the puddles have puddles.  With cold weather approaching the goal is to get as much water off the course as possible to prevent ice buildup.  We went around the course and opened up as many drains as we could but not much can be done on greens.   Looking more like a skating rink than a golf green.   Luckily, a lot was able to run off before freezing up at night.&nbs ..read more

The year is starting off with a bang. Our first significant snowfall arrived last Friday coating the course with a clean, refreshing, white blanket. Once you finish shoveling you get a chance to appreciate the beauty.   A peaceful look to the course, quiet, clean and covered in white We have been busy building our new tees and have accomplished quite a bit. Shaping and drainage is complete on all our tees.  We also started trimming some low hanging branches on many of our trees starting on #5.    This is the new tee on number three.  Rough shaping and dr ..read more
