More Than a Schedule: Decoding the 6-Day Practice

How often should you practice yoga? Six days a week? Every day? Once a week? Once a month? As with all things, the answer depends. The traditional mandate for Ashtanga yoga is a six-day-a-week asana practice. What confuses some yogis is hearing Ashtanga teachers say, “Practice every day”. At best, this is confusing calendar math – at worst, it’s disheartening for yogis struggling to fit one or two yoga practices into their weekly schedules. “Practice every day” and #yogaeverydamnday on Instagram may seem innocuous, and might inspire some. But this messaging be harmful to yogis who haven’t been ..read more

Today is my last day teaching yoga at Machi Yoga. My heart is a puddle. This beautiful community welcomed me as a practitioner and later as a teacher when I moved back to my hometown in October 2021. In my past year of moving, these beloved people have welcomed me, first as a practitioner and later as a teacher. And while I’m so very happy to return to my apartment with my husband in the mountainous metropolis of Madrid, the sixth-generation Oregonian in me is heartbroken to leave the small mountain town of Hood River, Oregon, where my heart and soul reside. I wanted to make something special ..read more

Finding Stability Within

I’ve moved homes five times in the past year. To say it’s been physically and mentally destabilizing is an understatement. Some moves were planned; others were not. Ask my loved ones where I live right now, and they’ll likely pause and say: “I’m not sure.” Even my most checked-in loved ones ask: “Where are you these days?” Social media is of no help since I post my whereabouts weeks or months afterward, so the confusion is warranted. I don’t blame anyone for not knowing, and I’m genuinely touched by the curiosity. Why all the moving? Long story short: in February 2022, I entered Spain on a 90 ..read more

Celebrating Two Years of Yoga

Today’s a big day. It’s my online yoga-versary, and lucky us: it lands on a full moon day! Celebrating this day is somewhat bittersweet. Two years ago the world went into a “two-week lockdown” (oh what little we as a world knew then…) and staying safe meant staying away from each other. I followed the social distancing rules, but I didn’t want to fully isolate myself. I knew how to use Zoom, so like many other yoga teachers, I started teaching yoga classes online. And the rest is herstory – I love that this special day falls in Women’s History Month! To me, yoga is about connection. Whether yo ..read more

As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases made on Amazon. Thank you for your support! It’s late January here in Oregon. The flat grey inversion layer hasn’t lifted in days and the hygge (cozy) factor is off the charts. I’m cozied up in my favorite yogi work-from-home posture: on the couch with two big pillows propped behind my back, the soles of my feet together, and my knees are wide in a supported baddha konasana. A super-soft heated t ..read more

My Holiday Movement Wish for You

There’s unicorn-like magic in coming home – seeing familiar faces, visiting favorite places, discovering new spaces, seeing a unicorn on the bars… So far my favorite new movement space is a gymnastics school that offers adult classes! Fun fact: my childhood dream was to be an Olympic gymnast. Being back on the uneven bars and jumping on a trampoline reignited the feeling that kept me begging my mom for more gymnastics classes… ..the wild and focused freedom of physical movement… The bruises on the tops of my thighs I can take or leave – but seeing them reminds me: “Hey remember when we redisc ..read more

How to Learn Anything from Friends (and Stay Friends)
Rachel Drummond

Ever tried to teach your friends and family anything? It can quickly turn into hurt feelings or hurt bodies. No one wants that. This past summer, I was working in Maui where my friends live, breathe, and kitesurf. Even though I grew up in Hood River which is famous for windsurfing and kitesurfing, I had never tried it and always wanted to give it a go. Kite surfing has a notoriously steep learning curve that requires lots of safety knowledge (the phrase “let it go” is a literal lifesaver). Here’s what worked for me and my dear friends @kimmyis and @mlkplk, who are actual professional instructo ..read more

Gazpacho – Spanish Summer Soup

If I could describe summer 2020 in a word, I’d choose “steadiness”. Staying healthy in the pandemic required staying put which meant my yoga mat and meditation cushion and I spent a lot of time together. Indoors. Socially-distanced. But still, we logged hours! So far the word for summer 2021 is “stamina”. In the past two months, I flew home to Oregon, got married to the man of my dreams in my homeland, traveled with him to Maui to teach English online, and kept up the Freelance Dance – a delicate, yet volatile blend of calendar choreography required to sustain multiple sources of income throug ..read more
