1. You will learn all the sounds of the Thai alphabet
Roman alphabet based languages don’t cover all the sounds we have in Thai.
Especially the vowels. They sound very familiar to one another and some of them are even impossible to actually write phonetically.
Learning how to read is the best way to learn and interpret all the Thai sounds.
Further, as Thai script is based on tones, you will be forced to work on them closely and that will help improve your pronunciation.

น้ำ [nám] means water, fluid or liquid. It also features in many other common words such as the 14 listed below.

ขี้ [khîi] literally means excrement and it’s not a very polite word when used on its own. It’s actually more like the word “sh*t” in English.
But it is commonly used to describe everyday bodily secretion such as:

1. ขี้ตา [khîi dtaa]
sleep (in your eyes)
2. ขี้หู [khîi hǔu]
ear wax
3. ขี้มูก [khîi mûuk]
snot
4. ขี้ไคล [khîi khlai]
scruf, dead skin

There are five different tones in the Thai language: middle, low, falling, high and rising.
You cannot ignore tone! Get it wrong and a word can develop a whole new meaning!

Have you ever heard these สำนวน สุภาษิต ไทย [săm-nuan sù-paa-sìt · tai] ? One might shock you!
1. กำแพงมีหู ประตูมีตา [gam-paeng-mee-hŏo bprà-dtoo-mee-dtaa]
Translation: Walls have ears; doors have eyes…
Meaning: Be careful what you talk about!
2. กบในกะลา [gòp nai gà-laa]
Translation: Frog in a coconut shell.
