Although Vail reported 5 inches new snow Tuesday, we did not get started at Lionshead until 10AM. We assumed Vail would have been hammered on Monday given consensus opinion that it’s much busier than Beaver Creek. Liz and were also not exactly bursting with energy after Monday’s 5+ hour powderfest. I said that we needed to find fun and interesting terrain without taxing ourselves too much, but that we were on one of the best mountains in the world for that plan. We had short liftlines on... The predicted snow Sunday night delivered, with Beaver Creek being the big winner of the northern mountains with 14 inches. Thus we went there rather than Vail which only got 8. Weather remained overcast and unsettled, and with the pace of a big powder day picture taking was limited, mainly when I needed a “suck wind” break. This is the scenario where it was worth paying the $50 to park in the Ford garage at Beaver Creek’s base so we were in line 10 minutes before opening. Thus we skied... Read more ..read more

The weekend overcast weather continued, but Beaver Creek reported 3 inches overnight. As with nearly all Colorado areas, that’s measured 2/3 of the way up the mountain and there was no new snow noticeable near base areas. We got on the hill about 10:30. We were skiing with our friend Paul and his high school senior son Justin, so were guided to mostly interesting runs with some of the new snow. Paul grew up in Colorado and definitely dates back to the Colorado mogul culture of the 1970’s... Read more ..read more

Saturday was a relocation day from Gunnison to our friend Paul's place in Eagle. Monarch was the logical place to ski on the way, and in fairness Saturday was probably not a great ski day anywhere in Colorado. The prior week had warm spring conditions and Saturday was cloudy in advance of incoming weather. Elevation range of 10,820-11,950 feet is very high, so there was some hope for winter snow but it was extremely limited. Nonetheless the warm up groomers on the Pioneer and Garfield... By far the most exciting part of this TR will be from the night before, trying to get to the Aspen area. After one false start we were on the road a bit late and cruising along until about 200 yards before the Eisenhower tunnels when the guy in front of me decided to slam into the concrete Jersey barriers dividing the highway with the front end of his Suburban. 75 MPH to zero in no time flat. With my brain not quite comprehending what I saw. I thought for sure that I was going to be... Read more ..read more

Day started with a drive up LCC, took about 80 mins vs usual 20. The wasatch hadn't seen this much fresh powder since about 13/14 March so the crowds were out to get their Sunday fix. The one foot new snow stuck to trees in lower canyon like cotton candy. Visibility ranged from very poor to not too bad. It snowed most of the day adding perhaps another 5 or 6 to 12" last night. I skied with a friend that goes by Wasatchman, fun but demanding day. ... Read more ..read more

Friday’s weather and conditions looked identical to Thursday, at least to start. By the end of the day it seemed slightly sloppier in direct sun areas. The North Face retained nearly all of its winter snow. We were surprised to see people skiing fast and spraying snow on the single black groomer International under the Silver Queen lift. A local lady on our chair explained that International was intensely groomed including breaking up hard snow into fine packed powder. So we started with... Read more ..read more

After skiing Snowbasin we met former Admin for sushi diner, then spent the night in Spanish Fork. On Wednesday we drove 6 hours to Gunnison with quick stop at the overlook of Black Canyon. This has been a spring week in Colorado as well as Utah, but with the much higher altitude than northern Utah I expected more winter conditions. However the frontside of Crested Butte faces west and the base area was still bulletproof when we got on the hill about... Read more ..read more
