Hello everyone, This post is just to provide a general market update and some tips about assessments. Over the last 2- 3 months, based on the various pilots we support/ coach, we have experienced an increase of invitations for assessments. It includes airlines like Wizzair, Ryanair, Eurowings, SAS connect, Xfly, Citijet, Zimex, Bioflight, TUI and DHL. It shows an aviation market in somewhat of a recovery. Also interestingly enough we are starting to see “real” cadet schemes with TUI and BA now offering full sponsorships. The competitions for cadets schemes are of course fierce. We know first h ..read more

Why do pilots self-sponsor type-ratings?
Ask a Pilot

First of all, what is a type rating? A type rating is a course where the pilot gets trained on how to operate a particular type of aeroplane. Before the pilots commenced on a type rating, it would be expected that the pilot already holds a pilot licence. Why do pilots self-sponsor type ratings? The short answer is to get a pilot job. Most self-sponsored pilots complete type ratings based on a strategic bet to get a job. Sadly pilots often have to make the investment without any job guarantee. What is the best type rating to go for? Pay is usually better on jets than on turboprops. As the type ..read more

Free job advice to graduating pilots We would like to help all categories of pilots find jobs. However, this blog is mainly for the new pilots entering our industry – generation Z or Gen Z’ers. These pilots are typically born in the late 1990s to early 2000s. Bear in mind that we need to generalise a little when we speak about the aviation industry and generations. Also in this blog, there is a deliberate use of some very direct speech. For some, it might be perceived as being condescending which is not our goal. Our goal is to help and we try to do that by being honest and very direct. Old st ..read more

Violations towards personnel working in the Aviation Industry

Looking at the Aviation Industry from the outside, it may look like a fun and exciting environment to work in. The Aviation Industry may even be associated with something as nice as travel, holidays and enjoyable experiences. For personnel working in the Aviation Industry, however, it might not always be as rosy as it seems from the outside. Recently you could read about a male Chief Pilot in a major European airline who had abused his position and power. The Chief Pilot had allegedly selected several young female pilots to fly with him. When on duty with the female pilots he would a ..read more

What considerations should I have if creating my own company is a condition of getting a pilot job.?

This was one of the first questions we got after the academy had been set up, and by answering it here in the academy hopefully, you will all benefit from it. As you can see in the question and the reply we never put out personal details and we try to keep it high level. The first consideration is probably – can you afford not to do it? If it is the only pilot job you have been offered then maybe you don’t have any other option than to go down the route of creating your own company. If however, you do have another job offer on hand, you may want to consider the pros and cons. It’s only a few o ..read more

I have smoked pot will this prevent me from becoming a pilot?

I am preparing my paperwork for my medical certificate and I recently admitted to a physician that I used to smoke pot. I have no intentions of smoking pot again, regardless of whether or not I become a pilot. But will this prevent me from getting a job? We don’t think having a history of smoking pot is going to prevent you from getting a medical license. It is likely there is more focus on what your current health condition is like. As part of getting a pilot job, you will be going through an application to allow you to get an airport pass. This often requires a criminal record screening. It ..read more

I am an aspiring pilot and I just wanted to know two things: How often do pilots get paid? Is it twice a month or once a month ? And also, can new pilots choose where to live? I want to live in New York once I become a pilot. I know it depends upon where you’re based, but: Can you request to live near a specific airport before everyone else grabs that one? We think 2 questions became 3 questions but we are happy to try and answer your questions. Let’s start with the first one. How often do pilots get paid? Is it twice a month or once a month? Pilots are typically employed as full-time/part-tim ..read more
