How ICBs can provide eye care solutions
Healthcare Leader
by Julie Griffiths

From 1 April 2023, some ICBs will assume responsibility for general ophthalmic services along with pharmaceutical and dental care. At first, it will only be those ICBs that NHS England deems ready but, in time, all of them will take on these services. It is a chance to redesign eye care, and ophthalmolgy leader David Hewlett takes a look at how it might work.   With ophthalmology pressures and eye care need increasing, the establishment of ICBs and ICSs provides the ideal opportunity to address these challenges sustainably. It is a chance to reboot the eye care system across England with ..read more

PCN money and fair distribution
Healthcare Leader

There is an unspoken rule in general practice, particularly within PCNs, that any distribution of resources needs to be equitable. Whatever the issue, the number one priority is almost always that distribution has to be fair. And by fair, we mean even across practices. But is this rule working against rather than for general practice? It is very common right now for practices across a PCN to be demanding to see the split of how PCN resources are allocated to check whether it is equitable. For example, has ARRS funding been distributed equally across practices?  Is each practice receiving ..read more

Social value – lofty ambition or lifeline for healthcare?
Healthcare Leader
by Julie Griffiths

Delivering social value could easily fall prey to the more immediate challenges of day-to-day care when it is just one of many items on the ‘to-do’ list for Integrated Care Boards (ICBs). But embedding social value in system-wide planning is not optional. Net zero carbon targets are already baked into NHS plans, with procurement contracts assigning at least a 10% weighting to social value and all NHS suppliers needing to demonstrate carbon reduction plans by April 2024. And this is just the start. The long-term intention behind social value is to build stronger, more resilient communities to r ..read more

Managing changes in primary care as an ICB
Healthcare Leader

The current pressures on the NHS are well documented, and in South East London ICB we’re very similar to the rest of the country in that we are seeing real pressure in general practice. Everything that we are asking of them puts them in a unique position. They are often seen as the first port of call for many people in the community; they still have a high level of competence and trust.   And we are asking them to do more and more work in the community. There’s been a huge amount around vaccine programmes, with COVID, flu and immunisation for children running concurrently. We’ve also had ..read more

With some distance now since the first peak of Covid-19 and two years after the UK left the EU single market, Nuffield Trust was keen to explore the impact of Brexit. Our report Health and Brexit: six years looks at how Brexit has influenced various aspects of health in the UK.  And it found the clearest evidence yet that Brexit has exacerbated the challenges facing health and social care in the UK across several areas, such as NHS and social care staffing, the supply of medicines, and living standards. Staffing Between 2016 and 2021, the NHS lost around 11,000 European nurses and gained ..read more

How to be world champions: a new approach to the UK’s health system
Healthcare Leader

Imagine you’re watching a 100-metre sprint between two equally talented athletes. When the starting pistol fires, the first athlete bolts out of the blocks, giving it everything they can muster. The second takes a more measured approach, holding back some energy. Yet they still manage to win the race. This is the so-called 85% rule. By operating slightly below capacity, the second runner had space to focus on other factors such as their form, pace, and environment. By adapting and optimising, they were able to have the edge they needed to outperform their competition. Right now, the NHS is tha ..read more

Five tips for ensuring a safe setup for remote working
Healthcare Leader

We still haven’t learned how best to organise our work equipment in a way that promotes healthy homeworking, says GP Dr Michael Poplawski. He explains the basics of what GPs and practice staff need to do Despite it being more than two years into the pandemic, too many of us have still not adapted our home environments to be a workplace AND place of work. I see so many doctors and healthcare professionals on Zoom calls hunched over their laptops in their kitchens or on the floor. Stuck in this position for hours and hours , it’s no wonder they complain of physical ailments such as neck or back ..read more

Will real-time data improve healthcare?
Healthcare Leader

Real-time data is becoming the norm in everyday life. From instant mobile banking notifications, to live energy usage updates and ‘stream on demand’ films, waiting for information is fast going out of fashion. But we are not yet seeing the same advances in healthcare data. Cases where a GP entering patient data instantly appears in a national record, for example, are very few and far between. Progress is being made, however, and while real-time data may feel like the gold standard, healthcare demands a more nuanced approach. Connecting a fragmented landscape The NHS faces a unique technology c ..read more

ICB leaders need to pause and reset old assumptions to be successful

The creation of Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) is designed to deliver collaborative healthcare services driven by population needs and patient outcomes – a much more formal approach to partnership working underpinned by statutory responsibilities and funding. In practice, however, the success of this new structure depends on a significant shift in the culture of how NHS and social care organisations operate. It requires unlearning deep-rooted ways of working and being prepared to pause, reflect and realign before moving forward. This is no easy task, particularly against a backdrop of treatment ..read more
