These cards were originally published on the Fitra Learning website in 2018, I’m adding the cards here too so they are easier to access. Alhamdulillah the blessed ten days of Dhul Hijjah have arrived! We all know that the buzz that exists around Ramadan isn’t quite the same for Dhul Hijjah even though these days are SO important. To help create that ‘buzz’ an activity was in order To be honest, I find that having something fun and beneficial to discuss with the kids during this time is powerful, not just for them, but for me. This year I’ve designed a new set of ‘Sunnah Cards’ – (3 years aft ..read more

5 verses a day – Developing consistency with the Qur’an

Bismillah 7 months ago my dear dear friend ‘Gilded Dunya’ posted about a Qur’an Challenge she and some friends had been doing for 3 years, she had talked about it a few times before but this time it really struck me, 3 whole years?? I wanted that kind of consistency. So I pored over her blog post (read it here), messaged some people and we started our own Qur’an Reading WhatsApp group – 5 verses of the Qur’an every single day with the translation. We just finished Surah A’raf (in the 9th Juz) and SubhanAllah what a huge HUGE blessing it has been for me. Somedays it looks like this pictur ..read more

Hifdh Motivators

I was looking through some of my previous Qur’an teacher Nasiba’s advice in the eBook “I wanna be a Haafidha too” by Misk Academy and it was incredibly motivating Alhamdullilah. For instance, ‘Allah will place barakah (blessings) in your time’ is one I’ve thought of each time I’ve wanted to push my Qur’an revision for ‘later’ or ‘after I get a few other things done’. I also love ’Set aside time to purify your intentions’ – what a beautiful idea subhanAllah, I definitely want to incorporate it into my day more inshaAllah, not just for Qur’an but absolutely anything I’m working on (including pa ..read more

Small Deeds Big Rewards

This past Ramadan I had a 5 week old baby; this meant round the clock nursing and little sleep which in turn meant that typical extra ‘ibadah took somewhat of a backseat. Alhamdullilah though, Allah places you in all situations for a reason, the inability to perform those deeds I was used to, led me to reacquaint myself with various small but hugely rewarded acts of worship. I say reacquaint because I was familiar with these but didn’t always do or focus on many of them. And so I decided to compile them in time for Dhul Hijjah. The process has been incredibly beneficial, reading through each ..read more

30 Days of Crafts for the Qur’an Words

A very awesome sister has compiled a list of crafts to go with each of the 30 Qur’an Words. It’s a fantastic resource so please do make du’a for her and her family! Guest Post: Growing up in the Middle East, Ramadan was always just…extra special – The call of the muezzin, sharing iftar with neighbours and friends, the canon signalling the end of suhur and the electric atmosphere filled with hope and excitement. Here in the UK, with the longer working/ studying hours for most parents/ siblings and the even longer fasts (18 hours anyone?!), Ramadan can often seem like any other time of year for ..read more

Do what Allah loves in the best of days – A Dhul Hijjah Activity.

I’ve always wanted to go through the traits, characteristics and deeds that Allah loves with my kids. The ayaat from the Qur’an and hadith have always sparked such hope in me – I can be of those Allah loves, it’s not that hard! Like many of you I enjoyed the Allah Loves series by Shaykh Omar Suleiman and I was even more thrilled because because I knew that one day I could just go through the book with my children – instead of trying to find the information myself. A week ago I set out to design new cards for this activity and I just wasn’t feeling it. “I’ll just do it next year” I told myself ..read more

The Qur’an Words 2.0 – A Ramadan Activity

“Indeed, We have sent it down as an Arabic Qur’an that you might understand.” [Surah Yusuf (12): 2] The very beginning of my children’s experience with the Arabic language has been through the ‘Find a Word in the Qur’an’ activity I developed with my sister 5 years ago. The activity was so successful for us as a family that, I’ll be honest, I got a bit lazy and didn’t take their experience with the Arabic language any further, other than learning to read the Qur’an and memorising Surahs. Enter COVID-19. The reality of a Ramadan where it will only be the kids, my husband and myself at home al ..read more

I’ve often thought about doing a kids version of my compilation Small Deeds Big Rewards but the thought generally ends with, what’s the likelihood my kids are going to sit and read a du’a book? And so, here’s the next best thing! Dhikr Reminders to be put up around the house iA. I hope to have a few conversations around the importance of and the benefits of remembering Allah – and remind them to use these simple phrases that Allah loves. I pray these little pops of colour serve as a reminder to all of us to engage ..read more

Ramadan Prep for mothers with small kids
Parenthood : Muslim Style

A friend asked me how I prepared for Ramadan when I had a baby and a toddler and so I asked around on my Instagram Stories, Alhamdullilah those lovely ladies never disappoint and many shared their experiences.  I was surprised at how similar their answers were – and it’s probably not what you may think of in the way of preparing: Do away with any expectations based on previous Ramadans – If there’s one thing that remains constant as a mother of small kids, it’s the fact that your Ramadan will shift and change with each passing year. I’ve spoken to mums who felt they got a lot out of Rama ..read more
