Similar to @chat_brun , I will be doing a 1-round contest today based on a certain ethnic/cultural group. In this case, Ukrainian opera singers singing Ukrainian folk songs. Unless his though, each of them sing a different piece. This is probably not the best approach for strictly comparative purposes, but I thought it would be a fun way to introduce some people to new music. Anatoly Solovyanenko Mykola Kondratyuk... I love the song repertoire. There is such a vast amount to choose from, German Lieder, French Chanson, Italian Canzone, and so on. Many great opera singers were also fantastic recitalists and sung numerous classical song repertoire in their varied performances off the operatic stage. I'll start with one of my favorites. The great Lotte Lehmann starts us off here with a selection by Richard Strauss! 8 Gedichte aus "Letzte Blätter", Op. 10: No. 1, ZUEIGNUNG by Richard... I wanted to make a thread of vintage recordings that I love and share them. Now seemed like a good time! Come in, listen, leave a comment, and post other vintages that you love as well! Enjoy a walk back in time! ? My first selection is my favorite rendition of this particular aria sung by Dame Nellie Melba. I have liked others singing this, but none can touch the absolute pristine purity of vocal tone, shimmering clarity, flawless sustained legato, and impeccable pitch tuning she... I would appreciate your reflections on composers impacted, uprooted, or silenced by the Holocaust. In this discussion I am primarily reflecting on Jewish composers. What resources can you recommend? Websites? A good one is https://holocaustmusic.ort.org/ Are there additional ones that shed light on composers of that period? What intriguing stories of composers who survived the Holocaust? Zemlimsky, for instance, went to the U.S. but did not have a good transition. Other... Jewish composers and the Holocaust ..read more
