I saw Evil Does Not Exist in theaters a few months ago and was digging it a lot... and then the ending arrived. It left me utterly baffled, like I hadn't understood the story that was presented to me at all, wondering if there's some giant picture I failed to get a good look at. In fact I found the ending so confusing I ended up hating it. View Spoilers WARNING: spoilers below It took a likable character and turned him into a murderous psychopath with no clear explanation for what provoked him. OK, an important disclaimer here: I do not, in all seriousness, want to sound like an alarmist, or be the Chicken Little of the subject. Having said that, it does sound like a very serious and respected expert on public health matters, Zeynep Tufekci, is definitely concerned that health officials aren't doing enough to prevent what could become the next big pandemic - bird flu in humans. An excerpt from her latest opinion piece in today's NYT: The H5N1 outbreak, already a devastating crisis for cattle farmers and their herds, has the potential to turn into an enormous tragedy for the rest o ..read more

This sweeping and nostalgic eight part epic analysis of the history of one of TV's most enduring genres is undeniably detailed, brilliantly researched, and will make the viewer realize how much all of us have missed at times. Even a die-hard sitcom fan like myself was exposed to at least a half a dozen sitcoms I've never even heard of. In addition to several noted television writers and historians, there is also commentary provided by Carl Reiner, Jason Alexander, Sally Struthers, Judd Apatow, Diane English, Valerie Bertinelli, Jamie Farr, Cedric the Entertainer, Tina Fey, Dick van Dyke, Tra ..read more

Studio Profit Report: A Year of Major Transition It was another tumultuous year in Hollywood thanks to the dual labor strikes in 2023, the fallout on the film pipeline and the box office remaining below pre-COVID pandemic levels, among other factors. The positive: the global box office jumped 31 percent to $33.9 billion, led by Barbenheimer. But TV studios’ financials were hit by pressure on these operations across the industry, including due to the dual labor disputes. What did all that mean for the studio divisions of Hollywood giants? Overall, only one studio unit among entertainment c ..read more
