John Hopfield, and Geoff Hinton. You've heard me mention both their names. Hopfield began life as a molecular biologist. Now he's considered the father of machine learning. Every AI in existence today, uses Hopfield's methods or some variation thereof. ChatGPT wouldn't exist at all without them. Hinton (and his partner Sejnowski who's now at the Salk Institute) linked Hopfield's methods with thermodynamics, creating the first artificial neural network that could learn to read and write... Wow, someone finally has the right idea. Instead of excusing kids for their ignorance, let's try to elevate them. Here's an unracist version of calculus: Does calculus matter? This group says it’s a key to advancing equity - The Hechinger Report Some states and districts are nixing advanced math requirements, while the Calculus Project sees that coursework as critical to the success of Black, Hispanic and low-income students. hechingerreport.org ..read more

Living microbes found in 2 billion year old rocks, 15 meters beneath Earth's surface. Where there is no sunlight. The microbes draw energy from nearby mineral reactions. Not only do they physically fuse together, but their brains merge. Prodding one of the organisms causes the other one to exhibit a withdrawal reflex. Comb jellies fuse together when injured, study finds Research reveals ‘sea walnuts’ fuse together if they become injured, and nervous systems merge www.theguardian.com ..read more

You know you're on the right track when you discover that other people are thinking the same way you are. Here is a model of contagious epidemics. What's unique about it is, it uses the method in algebraic topology that I've grown very fond of, which is approximating surfaces with discrete maps. (Sometimes it's called "triangulation", if we're in 3 dimensions with a 2 dimensional surface). Normally, surfaces ("manifolds") are forced to be continuous, and that way you can use the methods... Balloon atom and spin

the balloon atom is much smaller than the wavelength of heat or light. Spin of the balloon atom (the magnetic/gravity field coming from the core of the atom not a electron shell) is caused by the wave structure of energy. The wave has a peak temperature at its crest and a cooler temperature at its trough. When it passes around the balloon atom, it causes a temperature gradient across the atom. The gradient seeks equilibrium and the atom spins ..read more

A bit of a show and maybe even a little static on communications. Northern lights could spread across the U.S. this weekendA strong geomagnetic storm could bring aurora as far south as Oregon and Illinois in the United States. October 3, 2024 The sun is sending a slew of activity to Earth this week — and that could mean strong displays of the aurora, also known as the northern and southern lights. For prime northern lights viewing in the United States, activity is... Read more ..read more

My top 5 is 1. anti-aging or age reversal. Fuck death. Hopefully it occurs soon and there is some promising results. 2. Womb transplants for males. Want to reverse the population collapse? Well, you aint doing it any other way! 3. Bioprinting---Want to transplant a organ or arm or leg? 4. Genetic engineering...Possibly the way to equalize all of humanity? Solve anti-aging or hell make thousands of other things possible. 5. Warp drive! Want to go to another earth like planet? I do ..read more

Ok, I suck at math, so here's a question: I have some metal bars that are composed of 30% tin and 70% lead. The bars weigh 1 pound, 11 ounces. I want to create an alloy consisting of 2% tin, 6% antimony, and 92% lead. Using one of those bars, how many pounds and ounces of lead and antimony do I need to get a 2% tin, 6% antimony, and 92% lead alloy? Probably a simple question, but I haven't used any math in 35 years ..read more
