For tubing there's the more specialised tool like this https://www.westlab.com.au/glass-tubing ... ium-cutter

Thank you very much bigmack and Loopy! I ended up purchasing the ones from MTA, hopefully they come in time otherwise I'll be making the resistor above! I'm very new to the whole electricity/circuit world so this helps a lot!

Maybe a bit of both. I think we're over-cautious regarding borax, but I deplore the use of herbicides and pesticides by untrained people. The effect on biodiversity is overwhelming bad. I have my ChemCert card, and I think you should be unable to buy such toxins without one.
Interestingly, when they first introduced Chemcert a million years ago, the intention was that you would not be able to purchase hazardous pesticides without having done the training. That never took off, can you imagine the influence that Bunnings has and why it never happened? Only in recent times has Bunning stopped s ..read more

Thats cunning LTB
What strength Ethanol is that ? Do you use the Absolute ?
Or good old Diggers Methylated spirits ?
That would have been a real time saver back when we had all the covid sterilising nightmare .
70% with a tiny dash of dish detergent.
I asked he wrong person when we could stop, only to be told we should have been cleaning them after every use already. Now I am stuck doing it.

I then use BBQ tongs to lift them out. It would need a few tweaks to be perfect but it has saved me lots of ethanol and time.
Just make sure you avoid anything that rusts!

Incidentally , using 10watt resistors , you wouldn’t actually need to use water ….. especially if you had 20 ohms @ 20 watts .
However , the reason water is used is because the resistance of the resistor changes as it gets hot . By using water cooling , the resistor becomes an “Ohmic Resistor” meaning its value does not change as it gets hotter. So when the students plot voltage against current , they get a straight line graph .
Also water is used to cool resistors to stop them burning out .

Serrata are now owned by MTA .
I made some water cooled resistors for my wife last year .
I bought some screw lid jars from $2 shop and some banana sockets and resistors from Jaycar .
EDIT : I just remembered Jaycar didn’t have enough resistors and sockets in the local store so I bought some from an old supplier I used when I fixed TVs .
Anyway ,she had always used 5ohm resistors . The reason being that as the students only had 5amp meters , any higher value resistors would make current measurements too inaccurate . Any lower resistor value , and the current starts to exceed what the power p ..read more
