Norwegian Doom Metal extremists COFFIN STORM promise a cult banger in the form of their debut album. Out via Peaceville Records on March 29th. Hitting hard from the onset with meaty riffing and primitive drums, Coffin Storm introduce their morbid cacophony violently. The estranged vocals and classically Fenriz-esque delivery atop the mountainous guitars feels sort of like later Darkthrone, but with some of the more enchanting elements from Candlemass heightened. There is also a thrashiness coming through, which feels natural from members of Aura Noir and Infernö being involved. Overall, the cu ..read more

Several years have passed since SPECTRAL VOICE gave us one of the best modern Death Metal records for many many years. Below we talk about “Sparagmos”, the highly anticipated follow-up to “Eroded Corridors Of Unbeing”, which is set for release via Dark Descent Records on February 9th. Reverberate guitars begin with an otherworldly ambience, starting off as ominously as one could expect. Booming drums lurk into existence with charnel riffing opening a chasm of doomed soundscapes. Those who enjoyed the recent split with Undergang will be overjoyed to hear this continuation into bleak depravity i ..read more

Back in October two very unique Extreme Metal entities released a split album via 20 Buck Spin. On one side we have Dream Unending, whose otherworldly and ethereal gothic Death/Doom takes us through ponderous portals while the flip-side contains atmospherically charged Black Metal sepulchre and mystical wisdom from Worm. Let us embark on this adventure together. Dream Unending Dreary guitars and vocals come in with a mountainous heaviness coupled with the body of acoustic guitar and slow drum work. The sleepy nature and stunning production of the music blend the more ambient end of Extreme Met ..read more

Californian epic Heavy Metal masters CIRITH UNGOL are back with their sixth album. Set for release via Metal Blade Records on October 20th. Lead single “Velocity (S.E.P.)” kicks right in with pummelling rhythms and soaring leads, blasting us in the face with pure metallic fury of grandiose proportions. Tim’s unique vocals cut like a razor through the massive mix of guitars, bass and drums, with the entire band feeling full of rejuvenated energy and creativity. After a phenomenal comeback LP and EP, it’s great to feel that this titanic band is not running out of steam when a record starts this ..read more

Brazilian Death-Doom Metallers FOSSILIZATION created a stir in the underground with their fantastic EP and split with Ritual Necromancy. Now they return, this time with a debut full length, out via Everlasting Spew Records on September 8th. Solemn riffing contorts into life with intricate cymbal work, introducing the diabolic onslaught of evil extremity gloriously. While eerie, cavernous and otherworldly, the ferocity and punchiness of Fossilization is unmistakably intense with a savage execution. Throwing us in with such force can only promise greatness, The convulsive and malicious sounds ar ..read more

Canadian epic Heavy Metal mob SMOULDER recently unleashed their 2nd album via Cruz Del Sur. After seeing them play two awesome shows at Keep It True, I decided I needed to cover this record. Delivering a mighty blow with furious riffing, no time wasted, we dive right into the quest. Melody and punishing percussion intertwine to conjure a splendidly enthralling attack of Heavy Metal packed with atmosphere. Wailing, powerful vocals soon join to add to the bewitching sound with the entire band making their impact felt. The production is gloriously warm with plenty of presence in the low end while ..read more

SPLIT REVIEW: Tchornobog / Abyssal

In an abyss where Black, Death and Doom Metal converge in dissonant, warped and terrifying territories a new split spawns. Out now via Lupus Lounge is this new offering from TCHORNOBOG and ABYSSAL. Tchornobog‘s side opens with estranged sounds that certainly convey discomfort before a malicious array of off-kilter drums and twitching guitars erupt into a dissonant display of psychedelia. The vocals fit the chasmic production with a snarling groan to them while the utterly dense walls of explorative and ferocious instrumentation paint an anguishing canvas of oddities. It is worth noting that wi ..read more

Ceremonial Death Metallers JADE offer up their debut full length album, four years after a single demo. Out via Pulverised Records on November 25th. As an aside, this is also my 1000th post on this website! Dragging itself into life with a drudging heaviness that welcomes us in without need for meandering intros, Jade deliver beautifully intense riffing with a majestic quality. Equally foreboding is the vocal delivery which is quite reminiscent of Okoi from Bølzer, which definitely lends a haunting quality to the monstrous drumming and darkened guitar riffs. Blasting energy and doomy moments i ..read more

Would it be Halloween without a new ACID WITCH record? Probably, but one will make it even cooler! Out on, you guessed it, October 31st via Hells Headbangers Records. Spooky synths naturally kick off the classic horror vibes with the eerie incantations that add demonic forces to the ambience. The usually grooving riffs and pumping drums are slicing through the mix with evil vocals to create that formidable sound and with some soaring leads, the overall feeling of their return is one of triumph. Acid Witch have always been good at making something catchy, which in Death-Doom can be a bit tricky ..read more

ALBUM REVIEW: Mortuous – Upon Desolation

MORTUOUS are back with their 2nd album of rotten old school Death Metal worship. Out on September 16th via Carbonized Records and Extremely Rotten Productions. Blasting into life with a barrage of belching riffs and blast-beats, the fetid odour of old school Death Metal is reeking in the air. The malignant musicianship is lurking in the low end while foul vocals emanate through the mix which moves quickly into the depraved depths of Death Metal, with extremely murky mastering that lends to the filthy sound of the album. Mid-tempo grooves come in with those New York / New Jersey style stomps wh ..read more
