When dedicated volunteer, Anita Ulwelling, passed away unexpectedly in January 2021, the Hormel Historic Home felt a calling to honor her legacy. Annually, in early May close to Ulwelling’s birthday, the historic house museum celebrates two of her favorite things to honor her and raise funds for the 501©3 nonprofit organization she cherished. The Spring Card/Game Playing Luncheon & Party will be held at 11:30 a.m. on May 2. MINNEAPOLIS  — Smokers in Minneapolis will pay some of the highest cigarette prices in the country after the City Council voted unanimously Thursday to impose a minimum retail price of $15 per pack to promote public health. The ordinance not only sets a floor price. It prevents smokers and retailers from getting around it by prohibiting price discounts and coupons, which several tobacco companies circulate online to lure customers and reinforce brand loyalty. As part of an expanded trip to Austin on Thursday, Gov. Tim Walz visited The Hormel Institute to learn more about recent efforts to expand the facility’s bioimaging capabilities as well as its expanded educational efforts. The Institute is hoping to secure $20 million in bonding money from the state legislature, pushed in bills by both Sen. Gene Dornink and Rep. Patricia Mueller, that will go toward its Minnesota Bioimaging Center (MBiC) expansion. The estimated cost of the first phase of this project is around $50 million. On Thursday evening, at the SPAM Museum, a special showing was held featuring the art of students at Austin Public Schools. The exhibit, “A Work of Art — Creating Food Security,” opened up the difficult question of food insecurity to students who examined the issue through art. In September of 2022, Senators Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith were in Austin touting the securement of $25 million in federal dollars for the bridge replacement project currently underway in Austin.
