It was special in more ways than one. The book itself is a rarity in documenting a town’s history. “Black Diamond: Mining the Memories”is based upon 100 hours of taped interviewsof folks who lived in the days of Black Diamond’s coal mining history. It took years for the tapes to be transcribed, totaling 700 pages of information.
Diane and Cory Olson compiled and edited this very rich history on behalf of Black Diamond Historical Society. The book was published in 1988. The Olsons were on hand this month for a book-signing event at the town’s depot museum.

With Cedar River now flowing at “high tide,” the history of racing should catch the attention of those who witnessed those races 50 years ago. The starting point was generally at Landsburg, then downstream along Dorre Don Road, under-and-around Maple Valley Highway, and near Cedar Grove Road into Renton.

A quilt documenting the history of Maple Valley hangs on one wall at Cedar Grange Hall; an antique cash register accepts your payments. Pleasant aromas and the sound of laughter greet guests at the door. Cedar Grange Hall was moved to its present location (alongside Maple Valley Highway) 105 years ago. Tahoma students need you to vote on the Replacement Levy on April 23rd. They want you to vote YES. You may want to vote YES or No, but vote.
About 17% of Tahoma School District’s general budget is this Replacement Levy. Not new taxes, this is just a reauthorization of an existing tax, increased a bit due to inflation. 85% of the Replacement Levy funds people – salaries and benefits. 15% funds equipment, supplies, utilities, and facilities. Vote down the levy and the District will have no choice but to cut programs.

The City of Maple Valley City Council adopted Ordinance No. O-24-816 “Shopping Cart Regulation” at the March 25, 2024 City Council meeting.
The Council determined there is a need to add a chapter to the Maple Valley Municipal Code to address abandoned, discarded, or stolen shopping carts.
The primary purpose of this chapter is to motivate owners and operators of retail establishments to use means available to deter, prevent and mitigate the removal of shopping carts from their business premises and to provide for the prompt retrieval of lost, stolen or abandoned shopping carts.
