This Sunday,  March 14th, Orthodox Christians will begin the Great Lent following Forgiveness Vespers.   Forgiveness Vespers has always been one of my favorite of the Orthodox services, always bringing me to tears and joy at the same time. At this service,  we make our entrance into Lenten worship with the prayer of St. Ephraim the Syrian and then we ask forgiveness from each other performing the rite of forgiveness and reconciliation. Fr. Alexander  Shmemann  writes, “Now, forgiveness stands at the very center of Christian faith and of Christian life because Chri ..read more

Finding The Good

Finding the good these days can be difficult.  I have been a firm believer in gratitude journals for a long time, ever since reading One Thousand Gifts by Ann Voskamp.  My latest ‘gratitude journal’ has been a copy of A Journal of Thanksgiving by Nicole M. Roccas – full of Orthodox quotes (bible, saints, etc) that encourages one to give thanks in the ‘easy’ task of just one sentence a day.  Needless to say I am behind.  Yes, this lady who encourages everyone else to keep a gratitude journal does indeed fall behind on it herself. Finding the Good is important.  We do fa ..read more

What’s in your teacup today? My teacup often has a combination of herbs known as nervines, gently calming and uplifting herbs that encourage healthy nervous system function.  They are calming without being sedating, though some are a little more sedating than others.  Today’s nervine tea is Lemon Balm.  I’m looking forward to planting Lemon Balm, Melissa officinalis, in my herb garden this spring! Scientific (Latin) Name: Melissa officinalis Common Names:  Lemon Balm, balm, balm mint, blue balm, cure-all, dropsy plant, garden balm, melissa, sweet balm Family: Labiatae (Lam ..read more

Transformation

Transformation is a Process Transformation is  an act, process, or instance of transforming or being transformed according to the Merriam-Webster online dictionary.  Transform means to change in composition or structure, change the outward from or appearance of, or to change in character or condition.  It’s that third definition that I think we as mothers, or individuals, usually put our focus. Seeking Transformation In Stressful Moments In a stressful, difficult moment, I chose to go ‘take a break’ the other morning.  I chose to escape the atmosphere of the kitchen. This i ..read more

Healthy Habits

Is it hard for your to teach your children healthy habits? (What is it with boys who won't brush their teeth??) Is it hard for you to teach yourself healthy habits?   There is much regarding health that I really want to tackle and new things to introduce to our family.  My latest project is making sourdough starter with einkorn flour to make sourdough bread.  I’ve recently tried einkorn and found that my body can tolerate it well despite my very obvious sensitivity to gluten (gliadin) in wheat. Unfortunately with every new thing I add, I end up forgetting about or ignoring th ..read more

Goals and Resolutions, Cont’d.

Last month I wrote a post on my goals and resolutions for 2021.  I think it’s really important that we do set goals frequently.  It’s not necessary to do it on January 1, but it is necessary.  Goal setting leads to success, helps you see your strengths and weaknesses, helps you to prioritize, separates wishful thinking from reality, and sharpens decision making skills, among other positives. But what’s most important is to break down those goals into doable parts and keep them in mind and focus.  In other words, figure out how to achieve the goal(s) and continuously keep th ..read more

Herb of the Month: Chamomile

What’s in your teacup today? For me, it’s tulsi, chamomile and a little licorice root. How could I possibly continue Herb of the Month  posts without visiting Chamomile?  I can’t imagine there are many people out there who haven’t had a cup of chamomile tea.  If not a cup of tea, at the very least,  they have heard about it. The tiny golden flowers of chamomile are not only beautiful but a familiar  herb and common. Many, however, do not realize the full potential of chamomile. They think of those delicate little flowers not being so powerful.  Not so my friend, n ..read more

It’s been a busy week for me.  Full of birthdays, things to do, prepping for my husband’s hip surgery, dealing with current events, news of the death of a cousin, and just an abundance of all things. So while I haven’t had time or the mindset to sit down to write out my own post, I thought I’d share with  you  a reading from the other day.  We all have a little or a lot of healing to do.  One of my favorite books is Daily Vitamins for Hurting Hearts.  It’s  a sort of daily devotional by Anthony M. Coniaris (I have liked books I’ve read by him).  This par ..read more

Goals & Resolutions – 2021

I took some time off from the blog and from other things in life for a few weeks.  After the hustle and bustle of prepping for the holiday celebrations, we enjoyed a nice family day on Christmas and then took almost a week to just sit back and relax and enjoy time with one another.  It gave us some rest and allowed me to spend quiet time with my husband and youngest son – the only child still at home- and think about my goals and resolutions for 2021.  All of this rest and relaxation are an important part of developing a healthy mindset. It’s been tough to stay focused on them a ..read more

Herb of the Month – Pine

Welcome to the 4th Herb of the Month post! The herb of the month is White Pine! Are you surprised to find that White Pine is an herb? I was definitely surprised when I found out I could walk out my back door to the woods surrounding my house, pick a branch of lovely white pine needles, and make some tea.  But let’s remember:  An herb is generally a plant that is worked with for food, medicine, or ceremony.  There’s familiar herbs such as parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme- all of which can be worked with for flavoring or medicinal purposes.  And there’s less commonly known h ..read more
