Sir Christopher Wren and the Workers
Knowing God

In 1666, the Great Fire of London devastated St. Paul’s Cathedral. Christopher Wren, the highly acclaimed architect, oversaw the rebuilding of the famous structure. The story goes that one morning, during the reconstruction, Wren was passing among the workers on the site, most of whom didn’t recognize who he was. He came across three different men doing the same kind of work and asked them individually, “What are you doing?” To this question, he received three different responses. One said, “I’m cutting a stone.” Another said, “I’m earning three shillings and sixpence a day.” The final one sa ..read more

THE RIGHTS OF GOD
Knowing God

God’s Rights in His House God’s rights concerning His house have always been challenged. God had created this earth as a place where His rights would be recognized. That is why He gave man certain commandments. He gave them to man to bring him to the place where he would respect God’s rights. Through the recognition of God’s rights, obedience to God, man was to grow into all that which had been ordained for him from God. However, it happened differently. The adversary appeared and the battle for God’s rights started. This happened in the form of a simple question ..read more

THE SCARRED MOTHER
Knowing God

The offense of the cross means to come to God just as you are, “Nothing in my hand I bring, simply to Thy cross I cling.” Since the cross takes away all the glory from man and places it all on God, it becomes an offense to some folk. Many years ago, a mother brought her little baby girl to an orphans’ home in the state of Texas and asked them to take care of the child. The mother’s face and hands bore horrible scars from a burn, and she urged the officials of the home not to tell the baby about her when she grew up. The mother assured them that she would not come to see the child. Then she tol ..read more

Evening Prayer Lord Jesus, I come to you tonight. I know that You will hold me tight. I know that You will carry me Through blinding storm and raging sea; And I will reach the other shore, Satisfied and secure. None can snatch me from Your arms, I’m free from danger and from harm. Surrounded by a shield of grace I’m protected ever from disgrace. And though I am downcast and blue, I know that I can trust in You ..read more

FLEE FORNICATION

CHS in his Morning & Evening Devotional, July 25 “He left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out.” Genesis 39:12 In contending with certain sins there remains no mode of victory but by flight. The ancient naturalists wrote much of basilisks, whose eyes fascinated their victims and rendered them easy victims; so the mere gaze of wickedness puts us in solemn danger. He who would be safe from acts of evil must haste away from occasions of it. A covenant must be made with our eyes not even to look upon the cause of temptation, for such sins only need a spark to begin with and a bl ..read more

PROVERBS 17:4
Knowing God

A wicked doer giveth heed to false lips; and a liar giveth ear to a naughty tongue. Listening to lies and sinful ideas makes you as wrong as those speaking. Can this be true? Consider this proverb closely, for it is easy to miss the powerful lesson of these words. Birds of a feather flock together, and the only way to redeem yourself is to reject fools! King Solomon often condemned false lips, naughty tongues, and an evil mouth (Prov 6:17; 10:18,31-32; 12:13,22; 18:6-7,22; 21:6; 24:2,28; 26:24,28). And he praised godly and gracious speech just as often (Pr 13:2; 15:23; 16:13; 18:20-21; 22:11 ..read more

THE HIGHWAY OF THE UPRIGHT

A BRIEF MEDITATION ON PROVERBS 16.17 “The highway of the upright is to depart from evil; he who guards his way preserves his life.” Prov 16.17. Notice the words ‘highway of the upright’. There is a highway for the people of God to walk on. But sadly many are side-tracked by their own carnal desires or by the deceptions of the devil, misled into dangerous by-ways that lead to destruction. (Read the views of Bible commentators on this proverb, below.) How necessary it is to have the fear of God. God declares to all mankind: ‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart ..read more

There is a highway for the people of God to walk on. OUR SUFFICIENCY IS FROM GOD
Knowing God
by Tebeth

A BRIEF MEDITATION ON PROVERBS 16.1 1. The preparations of the heart belong to man, but the answer of the tongue is from the LORD. Prov 16.1. This proverb teaches us a great truth, that we are not sufficient of ourselves to think, or speak, anything of ourselves that is wise and good, but all our sufficiency is of God, who is with our heart and with our mouth, and works in us both to will and to do, Phil 2:13. Paul the apostle puts it more emphatically: “Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God, 2 Cor 3.5”. The prophet Jeremi ..read more
