She had made a few in her time, but never a box kite like this one, not with a tough see-through poly covering. The day for the test was perfect, clear skies and a strong wind, the beach was the best place for a kite and she was only a few minutes drive away. It took to the air in a grand fashion running out a good four hundred feet of line in no time at all. Walking to the edge of the sand bar she tripped on her shoelace, bending to tie it she found it to be a difficult task with out using both hands. She then did an interesting thing, standing by her side was her teacup Chihuahua, Juan, she ..read more

Joe never thought he would meet a girl like Frederica at his workplace. He spent an ample amount of money on clothes, haircuts and night clubbing to find the right girl with no success, so to find one at work in his overalls, well what do you know.. Unlike most of his construction work mates he was looking for a “good girl ” one that had family and a future in mind.  It happened in the spring when Frederica was heading to her secretarial job in the high-rise next to the large bank building he was working on as a laborer. The crew had just finished the first floor of the building so that n ..read more

I didn’t mind, it might be nice to get away from work for a day or so and be with my daughter. She had been helping with a family friend and their aged Grandfather, and for a time she would be on her own with him and was concerned about having some back up help if something went sideways. My job was strictly on an as needs bases, so this gave me time to sit on the side lines and enjoy the park like setting in a heritage home. This elderly gentleman had had an interesting history in the academic field of commerce along with a Naval position during the second world war which intrigued me. When I ..read more

Dear Sirs, I am not one to make an unsanctioned fuss however this situation allows me that license. My dear Auntie Jeannie from Old Meldrum out of Aberdeen had written to express her desire to come to Canada to see her wayward kin, she wanted to make the pilgrimage before the issue of depleting funds and the increase of gravity held her back, Auntie likes her Dundee cake. To put on a good show I spent a good deal of time applying spit and polish to our meagre assets along with making sure we had a newly painted and sturdy bed for the old girl. Gave the elderly chariot a make-over inside and ou ..read more

He had to warm his hands to do a proper job, so he pushed his fists deep into his trousers pockets, kept opening and closing them keeping time to the beat of his own heart. Waiting for them to warm he scanned the scene before him,  and with that gaze came another flood of emotions that crashed into and over top of the now fragile capstones of his logic. It was the second time he surveyed this wonder in the last hour, and its original impact had not slackened. Originally coming to mock he now stood confused and humbled.  The road that led him here today was for the most part construct ..read more

For Mr. Chan, declaring personal expenses or company expenses was always a question for him, he was a stickler for following the letter of the law when it came to income tax, filling out his year-end forms he would always fail safe on the side of the government. Today was a bit different, he had to give pause to what he should do with this nine hundred dollar expense. He was concerned about being fair to the government for he was a relatively new immigrant and extremely appreciative for the joys this new country brought him.   He traced the history of this expense in his mind’s eye ..read more

Dirk Blacklock had spent the last two years fighting the war to end all wars and in doing so saw some things that if did not end your life would certainly change it. Being in the trenches you tend to get to know the mates around you especially when you are rotting away in an open grave, staring daily into the face of death.   One of those that shared this nightmare was Declan Carmichael,  he was always up front in the thick of it going over the top along side Dirk. Declan never complained never lost hope and never carried a gun. Not your ordinary Chaplain. When they would over r ..read more

The poverty was grinding. Not only did it effect your physical hunger it desolved any remaining shred of self esteem. It took him two years of hoarding any bits of coin to have enough funds for himself plus skinny wife and child to board a steamer for the new world in the USA. When they arrived in New York with nothing he scrabbled to find work, any work. For weeks nothing and if not for the milk of human kindness of fellow displaced travelers they would have starved. On a rumour of a delivery job for a fruit vendor he stood outside that office door all night to be first inline for the intervi ..read more

It really did change his world, to think that a few pieces of wood could do that. Well that and his dad of course, pop glued together about six inches of laminated wood to the bottom of his right boot and that extension allowed him the universe. His rocket ship a hand me down two-wheeler from his cousin.  They called it a club foot in those days. Jeremy knew all the other names that nine-year-old boys had for it, but those ones were not as polite. Growing up in a little village on the West Coast of British Columbia in the 1950’s political correctness consisted of not shooting the mayor an ..read more

In the nineteen hundreds a young Irishman came to Canada to work on the railway. As a enterprising young man he worked his way up from a labourer to foreman. A month after being at the helm, a derailment. He worked feverishly to get it back on in record time, and submitted a extremely detailed report itemizing everything from spikes to shoring. Some time later he recieved a reply, “Thank you for your detailed report however next time please be a bit more brief “. Another month another derailment, along with a field report “Off Again, On Again,Flanagan”. Author’s note. This story has been told ..read more
