Photo by Tova Green. By Tova Green Kei Van Arnam has been the City Center Ino since January 1, 2023. She calls the Ino and the crew working with her “the bringers of happiness to the temple,” a phrase used by Eihei Dogen in “Pure Standards for the Temple Administrators,” written in 1246. The Ino is often referred to as the head of the mediation hall. “There’s some truth to that,” according to Kei. “What I find is a more accurate description of what I’m doing is coordinating and facilitating ceremonies. I’ve had a deep love of Soto Zen ritual. The chance to be so intimate with ceremony and to ..read more

Her texts will mainly be the Buddha’s first teaching on the Four Noble Truths and Eihei Dogen’s Genjo Koan. Buddha’s first teaching is about suffering, and the cause and end of suffering. “We know it’s the ego and delusion that‘s causing all the suffering. It’s hard to remember that. There’s a build-up of stories and identities we are attached to and have to constantly drop ..read more

Photo by Tova Green By Tova Green Angela Ni joined San Francisco Zen Center’s Board in January 2020 and became the Board Chair in January 2023. An active participant in Young Urban Zen (YUZ), Angela was regularly attending weekly Tuesday night meditations, as well as a multi-day retreat at Green Gulch Farm. Tenzen David Zimmerman, photo by Tasja Keetman. By Tova Green Tenzen David Zimmerman was the Abiding Abbot of San Francisco Zen Center’s Beginner’s Mind Temple for the last four years. He transitioned to the role of Central Abbot on March 11, 2023. What David enjoyed most about being Abiding Abbot of SFZC’s urban temple was taking care of the day-to-day Zen ceremonial practice and teaching. His days began with a round of the altars at City Center — the kaisando/founder’s hall, the kitchen, the Buddha Hall, and then opening the zendo with a silent jundo, a greeting to those who were meditatin ..read more
