Omakase Under $200 in New York City Recommendations for 2024 Editor’s Note: This blog is part of the “2024 New York City Sushi Guide‘, presented by Dassai Sake. The digital guide features a number of articles, collections, “best ofs” and “What to dos” for the Big Apple, and can accessed directly at NYCSushiGuide.com. As always, we appreciate your support of the blog and Dassai Blue, the first American-brewed Nihonshu line from Dassai, a world famous Sake company.  The rising cost of sushi in New York has forced me to expand this year’s Sushi Guide to include a $200 and under categor ..read more

Welcome to the 2024 NYC Omakase List, brought to you by Ledge Headwear Note: Ledge Headwear is a new high-quality baseball cap company I founded (yes I have a life outside this blog). Designed it here in NYC, made in Italy at a generational, family-run factory. Visually stunning, fits like a million bucks and stitched to last. Something for nights out and the office mornings after. If you’ve ever enjoyed this content, I’d appreciate if you checked it out.  Back to the blog.  Jesus Christ, there are a lot of sushiya in New York City that focus on an Omakase. I actually used some fa ..read more

Most Anticipated Sushi Restaurant Openings of 2024
The Sushi Legend
by sushilegend

It’s time for my annual list of the most anticipated sushiya openings for the upcoming year. It’s one of my favourite pieces of content. It’s also getting harder.  Why? Well, I usually piece this thing together by consolidating industry whispers with whatever sushiya openings from the previous year were delayed (spoiler: it’s always a lot) and mix in all the “most anticipated restaurant openings in _______”  that exist on the internet. Unfortunately, the latter has become a feeding ground for every PR firm. Are you a hospitality group that’s just added a glitzy sushi spot with the ..read more

Toronto Sushi Markets

Outside J San As captain of the Toronto sushi ship, it pains me to say that the city’s sushi scene needs a bit of work. I’ve said it so many times that I’m plagiarizing myself, if that’s even possible. But there is one segment of North American sushi that Toronto owns. Not fake ownership, like Mark Cuban with the Mavs. Real ownership.  Sushi Markets.  What’s a Sushi Market? Let’s give it two paramaters:  Grab-and-go prepared sushi ingredients OR fishmonger style market A modicum of ability for the establishment to make sushi from the ingredients you select ON-SITE That eas ..read more

Michelin NYC Chicago DC 2023
The Sushi Legend

I was fortunate to be included in the Michelin star reveals for Chicago, DC and New York City in TriBeCa last night. That’s not a typo – for some reason (cost, convenience, grandeur), Michelin decided to do all three cities at the same time. I’ve been somewhat critical on the outsized role that Michelin plays in food culture here and abroad, and it feels like it’s growing doesn’t it? People who cared about Michelin 10 years ago still do. And people who considered Yelp the gold standard 10 years ago now know all about Bib Gourmands.  The ceremony for all three cities was held in a mass ..read more

Outside Dassai's New Hudson Valley Brewery This blog slash way of life is sushi-focused, but it’s also always been sake-curious. Our 2023 New York City Sushi Guide was sponsored by Takara Sake’s Sho Chiku Bai Shirabegura, and literally every single sushi book I own dedicates at least a few pages to Nihonshu. (Side note: did you know that Nihonshu is the proper term for what we all know as Sake? And Sake is an all-encompassing term that includes plum wine, nihonshu shochu, etc?) Well, now you do. So when I got the chance to visit the brand new Dassai Sake Brewery in the Hudson Valley r ..read more

Pete Wells Q&A
The Sushi Legend

Note: this interview originally appeared in my regular newsletter. You can sign up for it here. Legends, I have great news. The incomparable Pete Wells, the restaurant critic from the New York Times and one of the most influential figures in food writing (my words, not his) kindly agreed to answer a few questions on the rise of Sushi’s popularity. I hope I don’t lose my Cynic’s Association of North America card for this, but the man is a food writing savant and I’m extremely but pleasantly surprised he lowered himself from the penthouse to the boiler room to have a discussion with me. Morimoto’s Sushi Master Episode 2
The Sushi Legend

Note: Morimoto’s Sushi Master can be found on Roku Channel (free). I’ll be reviewing all six episodes.  Note 2: Roku makes screenshots impossible, so yes I used my phone to take a bunch of pictures of the show on my computer.  Note 3: Read my review of Episode 1 here.  Uhhh….quite the reaction to my review of Episode 1. Did I expect so many people to find this show as bonkers as I did? Yes, of course. It’s a complete mess. Did I expect a bunch of the contestants to reach out? Absolutely not, but in retrospect I probably should have.  Let’s just be clear. The mess is on ..read more
