Jennifer’s story: My son and I were doing a project for his second grade class on the garbage patches in the ocean. Further internet research told us that most of our recycling doesn’t get recycled! As we kept reading, we learned that micro-plastics get absorbed into the atmosphere then rain back down on us. We were both shocked. I knew some of these things before but there was something about reading them with my son that made me feel like I had to act. I decided to start replacing our single use plastic items. Most things needed to be ordered off the internet, five items in (though I was th ..read more

Shea Butter, or Karite, is a nut butter derived from the Shea Nut Tree (Butyrospermum Parkii). It is also known as “Woman’s Gold”, because, in West Africa where the Shea Nut Tree grows, the trade and production of Shea Butter is a woman’s industry, empowering women, their families, and their communities.  How interesting to note that Cleopatra used Shea Butter or “Woman’s Gold” in her skincare regime. Clay vessels laden with this precious commodity were perhaps one of the greatest secrets in her beauty arsenal. Can we surmise that Shea Butter played a part in the dramatic love story bet ..read more

Soap manufacturing traces back thousands of years. Archeologists discovered records of soap making inscribed on clay tablets in Mesopotamia from 3000 BC and there is evidence of soap use in both early Roman and Egyptian civilization. By the 1600s in Europe, with the finding of Louis Pasteur, there was a strong movement toward good hygiene. Doctors began prescribing the use of soap. Today more than ever, and especially since the pandemic, we know the importance of washing with soap.  No matter how soap is made, whether in a large kettle with heat, or using the cold-process method as we d ..read more

Potager handcrafts cold-process soap and we believe it’s the best way to create organic soap with a multitude of health benefits. What is Cold Process Soap? By cold-process soap, we mean that the heat generated relies solely on the chemical reaction between the fatty acid (plant oils) and the base, rather than by an external heat source like many commercial mass-produced bars. Making soap with simple and clean ingredients, and using the cold-process method with organic plant oils is Potager's preferred way to make healthy soaps that nourish skin.  Soap is basically a salt. This past Saturday, I attended the Timberland Farm Grand Opening celebration located in picturesque Townsend, Massachusetts.  It was an exciting and extra special day on the farm! I enjoyed my first ever hayride, courtesy of the owner Kevin Smith, who seemed as happy driving the hay wagon as he was welcoming guests. I’d met Kevin, just a day before, when I delivered the first batch of Potager soap to the farm stand. His grandchildren were there when I dropped off the soap, and they immediately began unpacking and placing bars here and there amid the pumpkins and gourds. I was impresse ..read more
