My drinking days were normal A LOT. My drinking was not always at the rock bottom stage. For years it was just there. Wine at night, cocktails at games, drinks at concerts, day drinking fun, excuses, celebrations, good days, bad days, you know how it goes. It looked a lot like a “normal day” in society. I looked happy, heck I was happy. Until I wasn’t. When was the turn? I couldn’t tell you, but it morphed into an uncontrollable downward spiral. Slowly, I came became more and more depressed, my anxiety grew, my body & face changed and then, before I knew it, I was someone I didn’t recogniz ..read more

4 year Soberversary

Today is my 4 year sobriety anniversary. I always like to go back to the beginning on this day and dig out some off the work I did while in treatment. I thought I would share this card that I wrote 4 years ago to identify what the “real” me was at the time and then I wrote what the “ideal” me would do and how to change that behavior or feelings. Blows me away how  over the span of  4 years almost all of these are second nature now. It reminds me that intentional behavior and hard work do pay off!! Control freak  –> Ask for help, accept that there are many ways to do things ..read more

A “little” catch up
The Sober Modern Mom | Navigating through sobriety, motherhood, marriage, and life.

I recently did one of those “ask a question” things on Instagram to find out what you would like to hear from me since it has been months since I have written about anything. And a lot of you are just plain curious about the transition from two kiddos to three and what life has been like. So, I will just ramble a little about that today. I don’t want to describe it as “surviving” because I’m doing much better than that, but I’ve definitely been burning the candle at both ends! Needless to say, it has been an exhausting past 7 months…(just as am I typing this up, I wonder why my thighs feel dam ..read more

‘Tis the season of saying NO.

Ok ya’ll….The season of giving is upon us! I LOVE the holidays. Hold up a quick minute… do I REALLY???  I had to sit back this year and really think about that. Apparently, I loved this time of year because of parties, spiked egg nog, the excuse to drink all day and not feel like I might have a problem. All the while, it snowballed into these couple of months that all I seemed to do were the traditional/typical holiday stuff that some mysterious being in the universe had engrained in me that I had to do. My holiday season had become filled with excessive drinking, excessive spending, exce ..read more

Print SPAGHETTI SUNDAYS I grew up eating this meal almost every Sunday. I think it originated from my grandma, Joan, but I learned it from my mom, Deb. It was one of her few recipes that she made for us. Not because she is a bad cook, but because she just doesn't like cooking at all! (Like so many!!)  But this one she enjoyed because of it's simplicity and consistent, fool-proof results!  It's so yummy and of course, EASY Course Main Course Cuisine Italian Keyword Stove Top Prep Time 10 minutes Cook Time 20 minutes Total Time 30 minutes Servings 4 people Ingredients 1 lb ..read more

The Sweetness of Surrendering
The Sober Modern Mom | Navigating through sobriety, motherhood, marriage, and life.

One big driving force of my addiction was my feeling of inadequacy. I never felt I was good enough and no amount of trying to “do it all” could remedy that feeling. Who was I comparing myself to? What was I comparing myself to? I think back, and I have NO CLUE. My brain is clear of most of that muck now, but goodness, what a swamp it was! I wasn’t comparing myself to my friends or even other family members, I just had this constant tightening in my chest of panic and anxiety. I was holding myself to unrealistic and frankly, stupid, standards that I made up in my own head. My house had to look ..read more

Birdie Beers
The Sober Modern Mom | Navigating through sobriety, motherhood, marriage, and life.

There is this thing that some fans, friends, and family do while spectating that I really got into during my drinking days… Birdie beers! Or, heck, whatever alcoholic beverage you fancy, because your guy made a birdie (or maybe even an EAGLE!) I obviously loved this little tradition! It gave me a perfect excuse to drink. I even adopted bogey beers when things weren’t quite going Billy’s way.  So, being out here at Bellerive this week, brings back all sorts of memories. I love the game of golf, I enjoy watching my husband compete, but I also loved alcohol, it was once my best friend.  ..read more
