One month after the Jan. 22 floods, staff and students at Bancroft Elementary School in Spring Valley are just now getting ready to go to campus. Floodwaters created, quite literally, a river through the campus last month. A Spring Valley teen is being called a hero for saving his grandfather’s life. Alejandro Flores was awarded San Miguel Fire Department’s “Certificate of Life Saving” for giving his 58-year-old grandfather a second chance at life. “He’s my hero. He saved my life,” Joel Kelly, Flores’ grandfather, said. A fire broke out at a home around 4 a.m. on the 8600 block of Eileen Street in Spring Valley on Sunday morning. San Miguel Fire & Rescue and deputies from the Rancho San Diego Sheriff’s Station arrived on scene within five minutes after receiving a call from a neighbor. A tow truck driver is dead after getting hit by a vehicle Sunday night in Spring Valley, the California Highway Patrol said. CHP responded to reports of a collision between a vehicle and pedestrian at around 8 p.m. on southbound State Route 125, just north of Jamacha Road. The pedestrian, a tow truck driver, was later pronounced deceased. Lanes on southbound SR-125 were closed following the crash. Two pedestrians were killed overnight Tuesday after being struck by vehicles on freeways in separate crashes across San Diego County. First, a pedestrian was struck and killed at around 3:15 a.m. by at least one vehicle on northbound Interstate 5 near the San Ysidro Port of Entry, according to the California Highway Patrol. A man was struck by an SUV in the slow lane just south of Dairy Mart Road and was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities are investigating a report of a shooting that injured multiple people Saturday night in a backyard in Spring Valley. The incident happened shortly after 8 p.m. in the 9000 block of Ildica Street, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.
