The NFL on Thursday handed down a punishment for the Atlanta Falcons because of tampering with free agents this offseason. Among the trio of free agents Atlanta was found to have communicated impermissibly during the legal negotiating window was former 49ers tight end Charlie Woerner. NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero indicated the violations came due to discussion of things like flights after the club had legally agreed to terms on a deal with their free agents. Atlanta lost a 2025 fifth-round pick and earned a $250,000 fine. General manager Terry Fontenot was also hit with a $50,000 fine according t ..read more

Trey Lance will cost 49ers more than Brock Purdy in 2024

Everything about the Trey Lance era in San Francisco is strange. From the discourse and reporting around which quarterback the team was targeting in the 2021 draft, to his tenure with the team, to his eventual trade just ahead of the 2023 season – Lance’s third with the team. All the while Lance had to battle a veteran quarterback (Jimmy Garoppolo) who was on his way out the door for both of Lance’s first two seasons, only for Lance to have his spot taken by the final pick in the 2022 draft. It turns out we’re not quite done with the Lance oddities just yet. Because of the nature of rookie con ..read more

49ers have good track record with extending players like Brandon Aiyuk

The 49ers’ way of doing business might be a bit anxiety-inducing for fans. As other wide receivers have signed big contracts this offseason, San Francisco has calmly acted upon their usual soft deadline of training camp. They’ve operated this way throughout the Kyle Shanahan-John Lynch era, and as of mid-June there’s no real reason to believe the Brandon Aiyuk contract situation is any different. San Francisco has gotten high-priced, long-term extensions done with wide receiver Deebo Samuel, tight end George Kittle, linebacker Fred Warner and defensive end Nick Bosa over the last few offseason ..read more

The 49ers have been one of the NFL’s most consistently competitive teams over the last five seasons thanks in part to their star-studded roster. Combining San Francisco’s rich history of success with their slew of recognizable, talented, fantasy-relevant stars gives the club a major opportunity for its players to sell the heck out of some merchandise. They did just that according to the NFL Players Association, which released the top-50 players in officially licensed NFL player products and merchandise for the period between March of 2023 and the end of February 2024. 1 area Brock Purdy must improve in 2024

49ers quarterback Brock Purdy was excellent in the 2023 season. In his first full season as a starter Purdy broke the 49ers single-season passing yards record, finished fourth in MVP voting, and led the NFL in touchdown rate, yards per attempt, passer rating and QBR. Despite the gaudy numbers though there’s one glaring area Purdy has to improve in. The bread and butter for San Francisco’s passing offense is the middle of the field. For Purdy in particular it’s the intermediate area (10-19 yards beyond the line of scrimmage) in the middle of the field. While he was dynamite on those throws in h ..read more

49ers RB Christian McCaffrey should be on Madden NFL 25 cover

EA Sports on Tuesday will unveil the cover athlete for Madden NFL 25. That reveal should show that this year’s edition of the popular game will have 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey on the front. There are strong arguments for a slew of other players, but McCaffrey makes the most sense out of all those players. For starters, Madden has never had a 49ers player on its cover. Given the 49ers’ place in NFL history it’s pretty surprising they’ve never had a player on the front of the game. McCaffrey is coming off an Offensive Player of the Year campaign where many credited him with the 49ers ..read more

PFF: 49ers have 2 of best 1st-round picks in last decade

How have the 49ers managed to keep their Super Bowl window open for as long as they have? Hitting on mid-to-late round draft picks helps, but so does knocking it out of the park with some first-round selections. Pro Football Focus went back to 2015 and did a draft of the best first-round picks of the last decade at each draft slot. San Francisco has two picks on the list, including defensive end Nick Bosa at No. 2 and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk at No. 25. Bosa was a layup first-round selection for the 49ers when the Arizona Cardinals passed on him to take quarterback Kyler Murray. He was chos ..read more
