ESPN picks wrong loser of NFL draft for 49ers

The 49ers selection of wide receiver Ricky Pearsall in the first round of this year’s draft was a signal that changes are on the horizon for San Francisco’s receiving corps. While it was expected by some that the 49ers would move one of Deebo Samuel or Brandon Aiyuk after the selection, they held onto both for at least one more season. Picking a 49ers receiver as a loser of the draft because of the team’s first-round pick was the right choice by ESPN’s Bill Barnwell in a piece he wrote detailing some winners and losers from the player selection process. Picking Aiyuk was the wrong choice. Samu ..read more

49ers first on-field look at rookies coming soon
Niners Wire

The 49ers won’t have to wait much longer to see their first-year players in on-field action. Draft picks and undrafted free agents will all report to the team facility on Thursday, May 9. Their first rookie minicamp will take place the following day. In all there isn’t much to glean from rookie minicamp, but it provides different opportunities for different players. Early draft picks will just be hoping to get through the sessions and prove to be competent at football. It’s likely the easiest thing they’ll do in an NFL uniform. For the later draft picks and undrafted players it’s an opportunit ..read more

Deebo Samuel on Tuesday made some waves in the portion of the internet occupied by 49ers fans when a video posted to the official NFL UK and Ireland account showed the 49ers wide receiver teasing big news. The immediate and easy conclusion to jump to is the 49ers could be one of the teams playing internationally this season. International games haven’t officially been announced yet, but the NFL did announce the Vikings, Jaguars and Bears will all host a game in London. The Panthers are slated to host a game in Munich, and the Packers will face the Eagles in Brazil. Opponents for the three Lond ..read more

by Kyle Madson
21h ago
We already know the 49ers’ 2024 opponents, and now their full schedule release is just around the corner. Ben Fischer of the Sports Business Journal on Tuesday reported the NFL schedule will be released in full Wednesday, May 15. This almost a week later than teams were expecting. It was initially believed the release would come Thursday, May 9. Fischer said no reason was given for the delay. San Francisco hasn’t been officially pegged for an international game this season, although that is still on the table, but they should be featured plenty in prime time with games outside their division a ..read more

49ers roster: Is safety position already locked in?
Niners Wire
by Kyle Madson

The 49ers will enter their offseason with question marks all over their roster. There’ll be position battles for starting jobs at some spots, but mostly the club will be looking to sort out how its depth is going to look. One position that may not have any drama is safety, where San Francisco has six players on the roster (not including undrafted rookies) and it would appear their 53-man roster spots are locked in. Let’s run through a projected depth chart ..read more

How 49ers 2023 draft class can make up for holes in 2024 class
Niners Wire
by Kyle Madson

The 49ers didn’t address a couple needs in this year’s draft, most notably at tight end and on the defensive line. San Francisco has quality starters at both of those spots, but depth is a big enough issue that both positions landed on our list of the team’s priorities for the 2024 draft. While it may have behooved the 49ers to address some other positions this year, it’s also worth noting the 2023 class contains a slew of players who didn’t contribute much last year and could conceivably make up for the positional shortcomings in the 2024 class. Here’s a rundown of the 2023 picks who could m ..read more

2025 NFL draft: 49ers only projected to receive 2 compensatory picks
Niners Wire
by Kyle Madson

The 49ers have done a nice job the last few years of playing the compensatory pick game in free agency, which allowed them to stock up on additional selections thanks to their free agent departures and additions. They also promoted internal minority coaches and front office executives, allowing those coaches and execs to get head coach and general manager jobs which in turn awarded the 49ers third-round comp picks thanks to the expanded Rooney Rule. Next year’s draft will only see two comp picks awarded to San Francisco as part of the comp pick formula according to projections from Over the Ca ..read more

49ers 2022 draft picks facing make-or-break offseasons
Niners Wire

There was a clear path forward for the 49ers with their 2024 draft picks. They were aiming to help their immediate depth while also preparing their roster for some turnover next offseason. While some of the onus for San Francisco’s future will fall onto the 2024 draft class, plenty of it will also fall to the 2022 draft picks. The 49ers’ selections from that draft has borne some fruit, to be sure, but there are a handful of players the team will be relying on to either make a leap in 2024 or force the club to look elsewhere to fill those roster spots long-term. Here’s a look at six players fr ..read more

TD Wire QB rankings show Brock Purdy still has plenty to prove
Niners Wire
by Kyle Madson

It’s difficult for a second-year quarterback to acquit himself as well as Brock Purdy did in 2023 – his first full season as a starting QB. He guided the 49ers to the Super Bowl and finished No. 4 in MVP voting. Still questions linger for some about Purdy’s viability as a franchise signal caller. Those questions are reflected perfectly in Purdy’s place in the TD Wire NFL QB rankings where he sits at No. 16 out of 36 quarterbacks ranked. At first glance it seems outrageous to place a player as productive and efficient as Purdy was among the league’s middle-of-the-road QBs. He’s one spot ahead o ..read more

Don't sleep on this 49ers Day 3 pick
Niners Wire

The 49ers’ selection of wide receiver Ricky Pearsall in Round 1 of the 2024 draft made plenty of waves regarding the future of San Francisco’s receiving corps. While speculation swirled about where he fit in the near and long-term, the 49ers made another addition to their receiving corps when they selected WR Jacob Cowing with the final pick of the fourth round. Cowing’s 5-8, 168-pound frame is a big reason he slid, but it didn’t deter Touchdown Wire’s Doug Farrar from calling him the 49ers’ best sleeper in a list of underrated picks in this year’s draft. Despite his frame, Farrar’s praise for ..read more
