The former 49ers general manager joined The Athletic’s Matt Barrows to discuss the prospects he likes.
After the draft it’s time to see what everyone thinks of the San Francisco 49ers. We’ll be sorting things out through the coming days, but one thing I’m always curious about is what former 49ers general manager Scot McCloughan thought of the 49ers picks.
McCloughan joined The Athletic’s Matt Barrows to go over the 49ers and the 2024 49ers draft. In the past, McCloughan has been on the money. He never liked the Dante Pettis pick (which isn’t a shocker because ..read more

How 49ers’ WR trio of Aiyuk, Samuel and Pearsall could alter offense in 2024 (paywall)
“Last season, the 49ers had the second-fewest snaps (410) in the NFL with at least three wide receivers, according to the Associated Press. And they have run the fewest snaps with three or more wide receivers during Shanahan’s seven seasons as head coach. If Shanahan does pivot, it could mean less playing time for Pro Bowl fullback Kyle Juszczyk, who played 44% of the snaps in 2023.”

There were two specific people pounding the table for the 49ers to take Mr. Irrelevant.
The San Francisco 49ers struck paydirt in the 2022 NFL Draft when they took quarterback Brock Purdy with the last pick, as the Iowa State product has developed into a top-tier signal-caller in the league.
Purdy’s emergence has finally resolved the 49ers quarterback controversy that has been a headline since head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch joined the organization back in 2017.
However, it wasn’t those two that ultimately found and pounded the table for ..read more

It worked out for the 49ers the last time they selected a receiver in the first round
Looking back at the past is natural, especially during the downtime leading up to training camp and preseason. The 49ers have a rich history with their draft selections. The expectation is that they perform.
Wide receiver Ricky Pearsall was selected in the first round, but what about the other receivers taken in the first round by the 49ers? What about the other cornerbacks taken where Renardo Green was selected? We don’t have to look too far back to find out.

He did at Florida State.
If the San Francisco 49ers selected a defensive back in the 2024 NFL Draft who has experience playing multiple positions. The more you can do, the easier it is to put you on the field.
During his post-draft press conference, Renardo Green said, “I can persaonlly play all three positions in the secondary, no matter if that’s at corner, nickel, or back at safety. I can do it all. So really, just wherever the team needs me, that’s what I’m going to do.”
Green played 651 snaps at Florida State during ..read more

Insider insight from NFL front office members
A fun and personal favorite post-NFL Draft activity is to look at what scouts think of the players the San Francisco 49ers drafted. Instead, we’re looking at this through the lens of what was said about the players before the picks were made.

San Francisco’s third round selection opens up some options for the offensive line.
After not taking an offensive line on Day 1 of the 2024 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers traded up in the third round to select Kansas’s Dominick Puni with the No. 86 pick, finally addressing the position.
Puni, a sixth-year senior, played tackle at Kansas but is expected to move inside to play guard for the 49ers, according to general manager John Lynch. This would provide San Francisco with another young option along the interior.
However, the big takeaway was that the 49ers elect ..read more

Pulling each of the 49ers draft picks RAS score. Athleticism matters in athletics.
As the draft selections were flying off the board in the NFL Draft, fans rushed to research players’ films, statistics, and RAS scores. RAS, or Relative Athletic Score, measures a player’s agility, speed, and strength. The three categories are explosion, speed, and agility, with each category using different combine drills to add up to a composite grade from 1 to 10.
How did the 49ers draft picks score?
Ricky Pearsall’s RAS score (9.91) was ranked 31st out of 3402 tested recei ..read more

Will Lance ever catch on in the NFL?
On a Friday night in August, on the night of a preseason game, mind you, the San Francisco 49ers washed their hands from a move that didn’t work out and sent the former No. 3 overall pick Trey Lance to the Dallas Cowboys for a fourth-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Lance’s career never got off the ground. To date, he’s slightly over 100 career passing attempts. Situation, injuries, and circumstance prevented Lance from stringing together more than three starts with the Niners. Heading into the 2023 season, Lance ..read more
