Helena Public Schools leaders said a CR Anderson Middle School student was found with a loaded handgun Tuesday. In an email sent home to parents, Superintendent Rex Weltz said the incident started with administrators investigating a student who appeared intoxicated. The district says the weapon was found when the administrators searched the student's property. A Helena Police school resource officer secured the weapon. On Tuesday, April 23, Helenas Business Improvement District will host an open house for a proposed public restroom in downtown Helena. We are growing and we want to be welcoming, user-friendly downtown to both our locals and visitors alike and public restrooms make it much more enjoyable, said Megan Helton, the Interim Director at the Helena Business Improvement District. One person died after a two-vehicle crash in Lewis & Clark County on Friday, April 19, 2024. The crash happened at about 3 p.m. near the intersection of York Road and East Custer Avenue. According to the Montana Highway Patrol, the collision involved a Toyota Tundra driven by an 86-year old man from Helena who was wearing a seatbelt; and a Nissan Rogue driven by a 71-year old woman from East Helena who was not wearing a seatbelt, with a 22-year old passenger. Fisherman drowns after boat capsizes in Bitterroot River near Darby

A fisherman died on Friday, April 19, 2024, after the boat he was in capsized in the Bitterroot River north of Darby. Ravalli County Sheriff Steve Holton says 76-year-old John Brewer of Port Angeles, Washington, drowned after the boat he was in tipped over in a log jam. Two other fishermen in the boat when it capsized were able to make it to shore, but the victim got caught in the current. When you call 911, before police, deputies, firefighters or EMTs arrive to help you, you talk with a 911 dispatcher. There are 14 of these highly-trained men and women who work in shifts to help keep people in Lewis & Clark County safe. They are constantly busy, Helena Police Department Sgt. Noal Petty said. The Friendship Center provides help and support to survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence. They recently released their 2023 impact report. We love to do the annual report every year to give everyone a snapshot of the clients that were serving and to work that were doing and the funding picture we have, said Gina Boesdorfer, the Executive Director of the Friendship Center. This year the organization served 722 known individuals. Their 24/7 crisis line received about 1,800 calls.
