As the 2024 NFL draft is set to begin, it’s clear on major position of need for the Dallas Cowboys is left tackle. 5x All-Pro Tyron Smith took his talents to the New York Jets to block for Aaron Rodgers in free agency. The Cowboys drafted his supposed replacement in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft when they selected Tyler Smith. Since then, Tyler Smith became an All-Pro left guard, and if the team is hesitant to move him outside, there is not currently a sure fire in-house replacement for the elder Smith. As such, this weekend’s draft seems like a perfect time to find that guy. Here are ..read more

Pivot point: Draft's Round 3 real area of opportunity for Cowboys

Chronic needs have a way of taking some of the mystery out of a draft. Teams with glaring and obvious needs don’t have much of a choice on draft day. Free agency is typically dried up at that point with most starting level players long gone. It’s draft picks or bust for these teams. The Cowboys find themselves in just this situation. Enormous needs on the offensive line make it a virtual lock in Round 1. Needs at running back make it popular pick in Round 2. Jonathon Brooks and Trey Benson seem to be the favorite picks at 56 based on most mock drafts. It’s not really until the third round wher ..read more

The 2024 NFL draft presents an intriguing amount of early round talent along the OL. Oregon Ducks’ Jackson Powers-Johnson, aka JPJ, contributes to that outlook. His name is firmly in the mix for best center in the draft. The Cowboys took notice to that fact, proven by inviting him in for a 30-vist; a pre-draft process where teams bring the player into their facility, a day long familiarity affair. This is a good opportunity for both parties since a formal meeting at the NFL Scouting combine did not take place. The buzz surrounding JPJ by Cowboys Nation is no secret at this point. So, who is h ..read more

The Cowboys’ strategy in the draft- or at least in the first round- might be easier to guess at if only there were definitive word on where Tyler Smith will play in 2024. The team may like the idea of moving parts, but Smith’s third-party position trainer says he knows exactly where the big man should line up… and he explains why to kick off this edition of News and Notes. Then we dive into the growing sentiment that the team should trade back in the first round to pick up some extra selections; we’ve got examples of what that could look like. But maybe it’s all overblown hype: after all, one ..read more

The Dallas Cowboys are in the unenviable position of having several holes in need of filling and not many arrows in the quiver. After trading their fourth-round pick to the San Francisco 49ers for backup quarterback Trey Lance, Dallas is set to go over 80 selections between their third and fifth round slots. Most Cowboys fans see this as a reason, an imperative really, to bail on either their first or second rounder in order to acquire another third or fourth round pick. In a new mock scenario, ESPN’s Bill Barnwell has envisioned fair compensation for all 32 first round picks, and for the Cow ..read more

Here’s the frustrating part about the Dallas Cowboys’ three-decade stretch without so much as a conference championship. The Cowboys have had some good teams over the years and recently they’ve been able to maintain success thanks to a lengthy string of quality drafts. Scattered throughout the playoff disappointments have been several rosters of high quality, and that has been thanks to some very successful draft classes. Some might say this has occurred in spite of Jerry Jones’ ownership. That negativity is captured here, in our 10 worst first-round picks. The Cowboys drought is directly tie ..read more

The Dallas Cowboys have existed for 64 years, with 64 draft exercises, and they’ve built a complicated history of selecting quarterbacks. The Cowboys have drafted the position 31 times, including Steve Walsh who was taken in the 1989 supplemental draft and leaving out Isaiah Stanback who played wide receiver for the team and never threw a pass. Out of those 31 select few, 17 never threw a pass in the regular season for the team, or if at all, in the NFL. The formation of the Cowboys came after the 1960 NFL draft meaning Dallas did not, and remain the only team to not have a draft class in the ..read more

With just over a week to go before Commissioner Goodell takes the stage in Detroit, teams should be narrowing down their choices and finalizing their draft boards.
