Oven Risotto with Roasted Mushrooms & Tomatoes Recipe
St. Petersburg Foodies
by Abby Allen-Leach

This preparation of risotto removes a whole lot of work and stirring with the use of the oven. The majority of the effort required to make this dish is required during prep. The steps all happen very quickly so it is absolutely crucial that all of your ingredients are prepped, measured, etc. before any of the cooking begins. Oven Risotto with Mushrooms, Tomatoes and a garnish of dill This risotto is delicious on its own without the mushrooms and tomatoes; however, they really elevate the dish with flavor and texture. The mushrooms specifically are a true delight as they take on a beautiful cri ..read more

St. Petersburg Foodies

King State is brewing their own beer and coffee, which has quickly earned them a loyal crowd here in downtown St. Petersburg. The menu? Delicious. The vibe? Unique at all hours. I visited three times and each experience was different. I’ll explain more on that later. King State is a great place to sip the night away with their craft beers, well curated wine list and cocktails. On the weekend, they have a wondrous brunch and really great locally roasted coffee. It’s a place that invites locals to relax, enjoy a movie at the bar, catch up with friends, have a date night, or indulge in a weekend ..read more

Prima Cantina’s So-Cal Roots Bring Elevated Cal-Mex Flavors to the Beach
St. Petersburg Foodies

People that know me personally, when they associate me with food they usually think of Asian cuisine, or pizza because I make a lot of it at home and post it on the socials. What many don’t know is that Mexican fare was my first love. In my early career when I was in sales, I would travel the country and be in a different city every day, and eat at a different Mexican restaurant every day for a week straight. I still love it, and my latest affair is with Prima Cantina on St. Pete Beach. They started in Southern California, first in Santa Monica and then Pacific Palisades. The St. Pete Beach lo ..read more

Panko Crusted Pickled Deviled Eggs Recipe

My most recent restaurant review was centered around Sonata Restaurant at the Mahaffey Theater. For this month’s recipe, Kevin presented a brilliant idea of reverse engineering an item from Sonata’s menu. A few ideas were tossed around and ultimately, we landed on this one – Panko Crusted Pickled Deviled Eggs. We, of course, ordered these during our recent visit to Sonata and we absolutely loved this unique spin on a classic. Kevin informed me that the Panko Crusted Pickled Deviled Eggs from Sonata were carried over from The Mill by Chef Ted Dorsey who is now the executive chef at Sonata. Thes ..read more

Gulfport Just Got a Little Tastier with Julio’s Empanadas
St. Petersburg Foodies

Chef Julio Pagan Jr. has been slinging Latin favorites for years with his food truck, and recently went all in by opening two brick & mortar locations in 2023. The latest, Julio’s Empanadas, is at 2201 49th St S., Gulfport, FL 33707 at the corner of 22 Ave S. & 49 St S. in a former gas station. The parking is a little wonky, but it’s worth the navigational, please-don’t-hit-my-car-wincing effort. This spot opened in December 2023. His other store is Julio’s Latin Twist, 7815 38th Ave N, St. Petersburg, FL 33710. It opened in July 2023, and has many similar items if you’re closer to tha ..read more

Fortu Restaurant is a Welcome Addition To Downtown St. Pete
St. Petersburg Foodies

As a lover of all types of Asian food—I’ve taken Asian culinary courses (including a sushi masterclass), cook it at home several times a week, and have eaten it since I was a kid growing up in New Jersey back in the 1970s—you might be surprised to know I was actually a bit apprehensive when I saw the announcement on the opening of Fortu, a new Pan-Asian restaurant in St. Pete. Why? Because I was anticipating disappointment. There is not a lot of good Japanese and almost no good Chinese in St. Petersburg. The title of this piece is already a spoiler, so you know that in the end everything turne ..read more

Nomi Nori, a new concept by 305 Hospitality Group, landed in the Edge District of St. Petersburg this Fall  – a Soho NYC inspired establishment specializing in hand rolls, poke, sushi, sake and more. The group actually owns two spots in the Fusion building – the entire Edge Eatery concept and the District Lounge, which are located right next door to each other. Though, the two offer totally different vibes. Both spaces beautifully fuse tradition with innovation and offer a selection of expertly crafted eats. To complement the culinary journey, they also serve inventive and thoughtful cock ..read more
