Five Years Locced!

In January of 2018, I returned to work after maternity leave. I had put my hair into two–strand twists; which had become one of my favorite hair styles in the 7 years since I had stopped perming my hair in 2011. But with 3 babies at home, I decided to not take them out — ever. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Rishona Campbell (@msshona) People may wonder what exactly is up with Black women and their hair? Especially today in the year of 2023 when we are so more open minded about beauty standards. But we still have a long way to go. Consider how Michelle Obama waited until she w ..read more

The Jewish Race Myth

Ok, let’s just get one thing out of the way here (in case the title wasn’t clear enough)… There is no such thing as a ‘Jewish race’. The concept of race in an of itself is a social construct that was created by human beings (not God) as a means to label and stratify society. What does exist are shared strings of DNA among people who set roots and developed in various parts of the globe. That shared DNA often yields distinct physical traits among those that posses this shared DNA. However, trying to apply the scientific laws of DNA to define Jewishness is highly problematic. Let’s approach this ..read more

Jamaica At 60

Last week, Jamaica celebrated its Independence Day. 60 years ago on August 6, 1962, Jamaica raised its own flag for the first time. My father was born in Jamaica (before independence) so I have a lot of pride for the culture and country. So I wanted to highlight some facts that many people may not know about Jamaica — in honor of this very important anniversary. 1. A Substantial Percentage of born Jamaicans Live Abroad Jamaica’s current population is 2.7 million. However there are 1.3 million people who were born in Jamaica who no longer live on the island. That is 47% of the current populatio ..read more

Some information may no longer apply My mother was with me at the ultrasound when I found out that I was pregnant with twins. Never one to pull any punches, before we even left the hospital she told me, “You’re going to need another car.” Of course I knew this. My 2005 Mercury Sable did an acceptable job of transporting around an adult (sometimes two) and a toddler. But adding two newborns to the equation might be pushing the envelope. Needless to say, my twins were born and they we ..read more

I’ve been a fan of Mielle Organics every since trying their hair vitamins after experiencing post-partum hair loss after having my first baby. They were affordable and the company is owned by a savvy Black woman. So I’m all about supporting that. Now I am not one who is into fashion or beauty. My self-care regimen is rooted in being as natural and low-maintenance as possible. I am 4.5 years into my current locs journey. And mine are completely D.I.Y. But before I had locs, my hair in natural. And during that time, I learned the importance of moisture and oil for African-textured hair. Photo by ..read more

Life Inspiration from Malcolm X

This morning, I re-watched Spike Lee’s film Malcolm X. I had seen it before, but it has been a number of years. Back in college, I read The Autobiography of Malcolm X – As Told to Alex Haley. Prior to that I had read Roots and absolutely loved it. So I may have been more drawn to Mr. Haley’s penmanship rather than the life story of Malcolm X. Either way, I loved the book. It was a demonstration that religion and faith could change people for the better. At that time in my life, I was beginning to align myself with the Jewish community via the Reform movement. So Malcolm X’s story was reinforce ..read more

The (Current) Truth About Student Loan Forgiveness

Over the last several years, I’ve come across a lot of negative opinions about (federal) student loan forgiveness. Not just the ‘Oh well, you signed the loan paperwork so you are legally obligated to pay it back’ sort of pushback…..although that makes up a good portion of it. There are also those that say that student loan forgiveness is a scam….or that you’ll be bankrupted by the tax bill….etc., etc. And just a lot of misinformation in general. Now, I am not a personal financial planner. But I am someone with student loans. Over $200K worth of them. Nope…that is not a typo. And the balance ke ..read more

In my previous post, I wrote about having an incompetent cervix and how devastating that diagnosis is. You feel like a very broken woman when you discover that your body just can’t carry a baby — something that millions of women do all of the time, multiple times, without any problems. You see pregnant women who run and workout and do all of this physical activity with no problem. In the meantime, when I was pregnant, I was afraid to stand up and even walk around for the fear that my baby would just fall out. Just devastating. The Cruelness of an Incompetent Cervix

I was a bit older when I finally made the decision to have children. At age 32 I was done with graduate school and in a long-term relationship and the time ‘seemed right’. I had spent a good chunk of my life before then avoiding pregnancy. Growing up as the child of a teenage mother, my Grandparents made it seem that if a man sneezed on you, you could get pregnant. So like most young women — I thought that I could just make motherhood happen whenever I was ready. Well they say that ‘man plans, God laughs’, right? The first surprise that I faced was that I did not get pregnant right away. Actua ..read more

So – my old blog is gone. Well, it isn’t completely gone. I downloaded it into a pdf (about 300 pages); but I removed it from the internet (although I’m sure a cached copy will be out there for quite some time. So why did I do this? Well….for a couple of reasons: My site was injected with malware. In spite of paying last year to get malware cleaned from my site and changing webhosts, I still had some issues with malware coming up on scans. Also I noticed that older posts were injected with some spammy text. Not cool at all. So instead of combing through 11 years worth of blog posts….I just di ..read more
