I have been feeding K9 Supplements to my dogs since 2012. I am very passionate about their usage and benefits. I have tried many different methods over the years and have come to a practice that works for my dogs and the German Shepherd Dog. I am a distributor of the products I use since I believe in their high levels of efficacy. The subject of nutrition and holistic health care has become a very popular topic for dog owners. Just like feed, there are many supplements to choose from. People often contact me regarding diet and supplements. By the time we start to have conversations about diet ..read more

Schutzhund is a German word that means “protection dog” and was developed in Germany as a breed suitability test in the early 1900’s.  This evaluation determined if the dog displayed the appropriate characteristics of a working German Shepherd. Today, Schutzhund has evolved into a sport were dogs compete in a very demanding exam. This exam is now called IGP. Over the years, the name has been: Schutzhund, IPO, and now IGP.  This exam is very demanding and not all dogs can pass. The IGP evaluation consists of three phases: Tracking, Obedience, and Protection. Contrary to what many say ..read more

Remote Training Collars

Over the years, remote training collars have received a negative connotation. This has resulted from human being using the collars incorrectly. When I am explaining the use of the remote collar to a new user, I compare the collar to a car. Our cars are a tool. The car gets us to work and to errands and other life events. Some people incorrectly use this tool. Some people speed or text while driving which is an incorrect use of driving or the car. Do you stop driving your car because people incorrectly drive their car? Probably not! So my recommendation is to learn how to use the remote traini ..read more

The German Shepherd Dog is intelligent, brave, and loyal. I have been around the breed most of my life. My father was a MSPD K9 officer and worked with detection dogs in the 1970’s and beyond. I learned from an early age that the breed is a working breed and that it has standard colors. Standard colors are designated by the reigning breed registry, FCI/SV.  I am not going to address the breed registration topic in this article, but will happily save this for a future article. The focus here is Standard colors. Standard Colors according to the SV/FCI: “Colors are black with reddish-brown ..read more

Good puppy buyers ask many questions while doing their research. This process is wonderful and good. I enjoy when individuals and families do their research. It demonstrates quality and value of the home of a puppy’s future home.  The most common question that is asked is about size. This is a good question when left to itself. What is the height and weight of sire and dam? Period. Move on and are the pedigree lines demonstrating the size of the dogs to be medium to large working dog. What happens, very often in the States with puppy buyers is that people are looking for a “Huge Male Ger ..read more

Select a food for your dog is a decision that has many choices in today’s society.  There are choices such as: kibble, raw, primal, holistic, dehydrated, and homemade. When an individual or family brings home the new dog, choosing a food can be an overwhelming task. My first recommendation I always give is to buy the food that dog is already eating. For example, the shelter or breeder has been feeding the dog a food that can be continued. My only time I recommend to change is if there are issues with the feed. For example, an issue could be vomit or diarrhea from the food. And the issue ..read more

I am going to be honest, IGP isn’t an easy sport to begin. There is a lot of blood, sweat, tears, and obstacles to get over. Often times, I hear new folks say that the environment is tough and the handlers are not friendly. I have experienced these feelings as well. The sport environment can be tough in IGP. It took me a long time to learn how to function in the IGP community.  Here are some tips on how to start and how to keep your sanity: It’s a sport. Yes, some handlers are professional trainers and competitors. But, at the end of the day it is a sport. If you can’t get over the fear ..read more

Individuals and families research many different types of purchases. They research buying a car, a house, and the right car seat for the children. All of this research is wonderful. I wish more would research the puppy or dog they were bringing to their home. For example, there are many consumers that do not know about hip and elbow testing in the German Shepherd breed. This is an essential piece of health research when looking for your future dog. Price Price or budget is usually the first category that is considered when researching for a dog. I completely understand and support researching ..read more
