A plaque at Bruce’s Beach Park in Manhattan Beach, site of a beachfront property and resort owned by a Black couple who were stripped of the land in the 1920s, has been stolen, police said Tuesday. The bronze plaque installed in February displays the history of the property, which was the subject of a complex process that eventually returned the land to descendants of Willa and Charles Bruce in 2022. A person was found dead on the sand along the coast this Friday morning, according to a statement released by the Manhattan Beach Police. The incident was initially reported at 6:41 a.m. in the 2300 block of Strand regarding a missing person. The informant who called the police indicated that “he last saw his girlfriend near the water line.” Several people began looking for their friend and called the police because they were not able to find her. A funeral procession and memorial service Wednesday honored a 35-year-old Manhattan Beach Police motorcycle officer killed in a crash on the 405 Freeway. Chad Swanson, a 13-year law enforcement veteran, was killed Oct. 4 on his way to work. The married father of three young sons died at a hospital. A Manhattan Beach jewelry store employee shot at and scared off a group of thieves Saturday afternoon. The robbery was reported at 12:40 p.m. Saturday at Prestige Jewelers, at 3001 N.
