Discovering Your-self as an Artist. Discovering your “music persona” or what makes you unique takes a lot of exploration of yourself and what lies at your core. To understand who you are and what you stand for can take years of searching till its fine-tuned, specific, and perfected. An artist must know what their message is to the world, and why people come to listen to them instead of the countless other musicians, singers, songwriters, and/or producers. When people listen to your music, what do you want them to experience and take away with them? That is the job of a front man; opening yours ..read more

There are a lot of different ways you can approach Social Media and building your following but there are a few things you can do that will make it much more successful!  I am going to make this one a bit short since bullet points are easier to follow! 1. Build your aesthetic and get your content up!! Many people don’t purchase music anymore; most will listen to Pandora, YouTube, Spotify, or many other Internet radio stations over purchasing a song! Artists and teachers consistently talk about making sure you are authentic. What does this really mean? The definition of authentic, “real or genuine: not copied or false.” How do we know if we are being real? As artists we are comprised of our influences. How do we stay true to ourselves and make sure that what we create is authentic and comes from you? When we start we don’t even know what comes from us! I believe artists should explore as many avenues of music, study them, and embody them so that when they create their own style they can mesh everything that worked for them in different mus ..read more

What makes you unique?

I think this is one of the hardest things to answer as an artist. I personally have asked myself this question every day. What makes me unique and how do I make sure I use it appropriately in my music and in my image. When you start to find who you are as an artist, you start defining yourself by your influences musically, lyrically, and with your image. And many times we will hear, “you sound just like Sara Bareilles” or “you remind me of Fiona Apple.” (That was the one I got!) Which is a great observation from your fans and friends but how do you differentiate yourself from your influences ..read more

As singers we start off learning how to sing a song, phrasing, dynamics, and melodic arrangement through imitating someone’s version of their original song or imitating our favorite singer’s version of a song.  When we start we are learning how to use our voice, vocal control, delivery, timing, pitch, among many other things. When we are asked to perform a cover how do we make it our own?  How do you as an artist change and mold the song to you and your style and personality?  This is something every artist at every level must think about.  To some it’s an easier task than ..read more
