Modkat Litter Box – Our Experience With A Sleek, Modern Litter Box

My Experience With Modkat I think it’s important to start this review by saying I have never owned a litter box other than the Modkat, but that’s because it’s the only good looking option on the market. Of course I also cared about the functionality of the box, but if I’m being honest, looks were the main reason I went with the Modkat. Despite the high price tag for a litter box, I’m super happy with the decision. I live in a 2-bedroom 700 sq. ft. apartment with two other people, so although we manage our space well, you can imagine finding a proper space for my cat Java’s bathroom wasn’t easy ..read more

Why Do My Cats Lick Me?
Whiskers & Milk

Photo by Aline de Nadai on Unsplash Java licks me and gives little love nibbles ALL THE TIME. I figured it’s a good thing, and it looks like that’s mostly true. While it’s hard to determine if cats feel complex emotions like love, licking is generally considered a sign of affection. Cats usually lick themselves in order to groom. Mother cats will lick their kittens as a part of the grooming process as well. However, cats will also lick each other as a sign of affection. Cats actually lick humans for one of several reasons, but most of them come down to displays of affection. “This is me. I’m ..read more

Cat Tail Language Explained: What Your Cat Is Saying With Their Tail

I’ve learned that one of the easiest ways for me to tell what my cat Java is thinking is through her tail language. Before I had a cat, I never would’ve thought that there’s a pattern to tail movement, but it turns out cats actually use their tails to communicate and express their emotions (among other body language). Photo by Christin Hume on Unsplash Thankfully, animal behaviorists like Pam Bennett have done plenty of research to help cat owners understand the nuances of what their cat is trying to say. I’ve also found the ASPCA to have extensive resources on cat behavior. What Do Different ..read more

Java Peed All Over My Bed…

I imagine this must be like having a child and waking up in the middle of the night to find that they have soiled the sheets. It was around 2 a.m. when Java woke me up by pawing at my legs through the comforter. Definitely not normal for her, I sat up to check everything was okay and realized she wasn’t pawing at me…. My stomach sank as I realized our bed had become a litter box and the comforter was SOAKED with her pee. There was no point getting upset with her though, it’s not like she did it out of spite. When cats do something wrong, they usually have a logical reason for doing it, even i ..read more

Is Catnip Bad For Cats? Why Do They Love It?

Photo by Ludemeula Fernandes on Unsplash As a new cat owner I had obviously heard of the effects catnip can have on my feline companion, but I wondered…is catnip safe for cats? I mean, my friends said it’s basically weed for cats, so I wanted to do my due diligence before just giving this stuff to them. Long story short, catnip IS safe for cats and kittens. It’s nontoxic and completely safe to smell and eat (in moderation), but there are certainly some important facts to know. Though catnip is safe for cats, it can cause some mild sickness if they eat WAY too much of it. But even th ..read more

My Cat Is Shaking Her Head and Scratching Her Ears!

With my cat Java’s recent visit to the Vet, I’ve had to research why a cat might be shaking their head and scratching their ears. Cats don’t do this normally, so it was a sign that something was incredibly irritating. Photo by Dominik Kempf on Unsplash According to the vet, head shaking and ear scratching can be signs of a variety of medical conditions that range from minor to serious. Thankfully Java only had a minor ear infection. However, this got me looking into ALL of the other things it could have been and how to be prepared for the next time she shows signs of displeasure. Java Has An Ear Infection!

It hasn’t even been two weeks since we adopted this little furball and already she’s making friends at the vet! It started with a little bit of ear scratching a couple of days ago, but I thought nothing of it – it wasn’t very often and I wasn’t aware that ear scratching isn’t normal. As she started scratching more often and shaking her head I realized something must be up and made our first vet appointment. Time To Go To the Vet! After researching ear problems in cats more, I learned any ear scratching or head shaking is a sign that there could be something up with her ears and is not normal ..read more

Before this year, it never once occurred to me that I might one day be referred to as a cat dad. Now that such a day has come, it only seems right to commemorate it with the start of a cat blog. That’s not the real reason for this blog though… As excited as I am to share my experiences living with a cat, the real reason for this blog is that I’m a compulsive researcher. I’m always on the internet and reading books to figure out the best ways to do things or to dive deep into my hobbies. This need to research will be no different with cats, so I figured why not have a place to share my thoughts ..read more
