Vega Addressing Concerns About Temporary Shelter Site

The state’s plan to use the former Old Soldiers’ Home as a temporary shelter site to ease the ongoing migrant crisis literally hits close to home for District 2 Councilor Melinda Vega. The Quigley Building is in Vega’s district and close to her own home. Since the plan to use the facility to house up to 100 migrant families over the next year was first announced last month, Vega said has been taking steps to inform the public and listen to her neighbor’s concerns. Small Increases in Water and Sewer Rates Proposed

The city’s public works commissioner is recommending an increase of 1.5 percent for the FY 2025 water and sewer rates. At last week’s meeting, the city council voted to hold a ways and means subcommittee meeting with public works commissioner Cate Fox-Lent and City Manager Fidel Maltez for a discussion of the recommendation. A $2.5 million federal grant from the US DOT’s Reconnecting Communities and Neighborhoods Grants Program will help reconnect Chelsea and East Boston by path along Chelsea Creek. “The funded project, titled Greening Chelsea Creek, will reconnect Chelsea and East Boston with an accessible, family-friendly path that both traverses physical barriers, links disconnected active transportation networks, and future-proofs new bus routes,” stated City Manager Fidel Maltez. New City Open Space Will Be Named for Lewis H. Latimer

One of the city’s newest parcels of open space adjacent to the Chelsea Street Bridge will be named after one of the city’s most famous and accomplished residents. Last week, the city council voted unanimously to name the property on Eastern Avenue Lewis Howard Latimer Overlook, after the famous and accomplished African American inventor born in Chelsea in 1848.
