XShifter stealth installation on Scott Foil

Having obtained the XShifter unit, I went about playing with it, setting it up, and trying it out without actually mounting it on my bike. I used it mainly on my bike setup for Zwift during these lockdown times and after using it for a number of rides, I am completely sold to the idea of electronic shifting. I like to have a quite drivetrain but for some unknown reason, some specific gear ratios are just noisier than others. Whatever cassette or derailleur I use, I just can't get that perfect almost silent chain noise across the range. With XShifter this is completely eliminated since I can fi ..read more

XShifter electronic shifting unboxing

Having wanted to upgrade to electronic shifting on a budget and having scoured eBay looking for bargains Shimano DI2 or SRAM Etap components, I have almost given up due to the prohibitive cost involved when I stumbled upon two alternatives: XShifter and Archer D1X. These two options look ideal having the following pros and cons: Pros: 1. You retain your existing mechanical derailleurs which is cheaper to replace in the event of damage. 2. It's backward and forward compatible so it will work for your old 7 speed or even upto 17 speed cassette (if and when it will be available). 3. It's real e ..read more

German aero 45mm carbon clincher wheelset at 1436 gram (including rim tape) at USD 745 with Continental Grand Prix 4000 and Race tubes thrown in... Now that's a really a good deal.  Usually at this price and weight level you get Chinese or Taiwanese made carbon wheelset so for genuinely German carbon rims made by Munich Composites with MG components hubs and DT Swiss spokes... It was very tempting. Having done some research, it seems that their first generation Flechtwerk wheelset have generally good reviews but there were complaints of braking performance. Having remedied this throug ..read more

215 gram pedals for less than USD 30 Here is a good hack: I have a pair of these Zeray SPD pedals on my Specialized Camber and not only are they light but they are also easy to clip in and out, as well as durable. The only negative I experienced is that the chrome cleat catch on the pedals are not stainless steel so a small amount of rust surfaces after heavy use. No big deal and no effect on its performance but just doesn't look bling anymore. 260 gram for the pair So when I did the budget sub 6.5kg aero bike build, they were the natural choice for me. I prefer the practicality of SPD cle ..read more

SRAM Red 10 speed derailleur with 11 speed shifters As detailed in my other blog, to achieve the weight and budget of the lightweight aero bike build, some creative thinking must be employed. One of this out of the box thinking is to use a SRAM Red 10 speed rear derailleur with SRAM Red 22 Shifters. Well guess what, it works a treat, smooth shifting and all. Here is the video Eventually I did buy SRAM Red 22 rear derailleur, why? There is no reason other than obsession to have matching components. The price difference is huge though while the weight & performance is virtually identi ..read more

Sub 6.5kg Scott Foil 40 aero bike on a budget

Aero bike yet lightweight and cheap, is it really possible? I have decided to find out, but before proceeding I have set the following targets: 1. Proven aero bike frameset from an established brand 2. Sub UCI weight limit, ideally below 6.5kg...why 6.5kg? Well to go 6kg would be difficult on the cheap so the closest reasonable rounded figure was 6.5kg 3. No Chinese frameset, wheelset, groupset, or other critical components 4. No drilling of parts to save weight 5. Budget of maximum USD 1500 for the complete bike build including everything ready to ride So where shall we start, there's only o ..read more
