For many neighbors, it is a top priority to stay in their Marin County homes as they age. Figuring out how to do so is a question keeping some of us up at night. It was a focus of the Marin Organizing Committee when it formed the Aging and Disability Team. The group is tasked with figuring out how to make that wish a reality. As a team member, I learned a lot. A key element to staying in your home is the ability to have care. For those in lower economic brackets, it is the ability to have support from the In-Home Supportive Services workers. These caregivers show up for people in the ..read more

For more than two years, Transportation Authority of Marin staffers have focused their attention on four project alternatives that propose flyovers varying in height and length linking the highways around the area of Bellam Boulevard and Andersen Drive. After a closer analysis, staff concluded that two of those options raise too many questions about cost, gridlock and aest ..read more

A lower-than-expected voter turnout and an aggressive opposition campaign likely combined to sink a Tamalpais Union High School District bond measure in the March 5 primary election, supporters said this week. Charles Heath, a district consultant on the bond measure, said at a meeting of the board of trustees on Tuesday that voter turnout was less than half of the nearly 90,000 voters in the sprawling high school district. “This was only half of the eligible voters,” he said. “We expected another 15,000 votes.” The district’s $517 million bond measure lost by about 565 votes out of 45,345 vote ..read more

The Miller Creek School District will keep a reduced version of transitional kindergarten in its elementary schools next year. Kristy Treewater, the district’s deputy superintendent, made the announcement at a special board of trustees meeting Monday. The decision followed concerns earlier this month that the district would cut the program entirely. “We will reduce the program to three hours and 20 minutes daily,” Treewater said during a presentation on $1.28 million in budget cuts the district is planning for 2024-25. “That is the minimum required by the state.” Transitional kindergarten, a p ..read more

The results from interviews with homeless people in San Rafael are both revealing and troubling. Most of those interviewed said they want help getting off the streets, but affordable housing isn’t available and they lack access to the services they need. San Rafael and the county have been dealing with homeless encampments cropping in parks and parking lots for several years; those challenges have been obvious, despite spending thousands of dollars to solve them. Given the lack of affordable housing in Marin, finding a place to live in San Rafael is no easy task. But providing services – couns ..read more

In 2017, it slipped to No. 2, below San Mateo County. “We have among the longest life expectancy at about 85 years and consistently rank high in county health rankings for that reason,” Dr. Matt Willis, Marin County’s public health offic ..read more
