FAIRLEA, WV (WVNS) -- One man is dead after brandishing a weapon at members of the West Virginia State Police in Greenbrier County. Around 4:00 p.m. on Monday, May 6, 2024, members of the West Virginia State Police responded to reports of a man with a weapon in the Fairlea area of Greenbrier County. At the scene, Corporals D.P. Dillon and J.C. Mann found Justin Denver Grant. They asked Grant to put down the weapon, however Grant refused even after being tased. FAYETTEVILLE, WV (WVNS) -- Keeping students safe is a priority around the nation and the state. In Fayette County, the board of education plans to follow the lead of school districts across the state by hiring two school safety officers. The officers will be retired law enforcement agents whom the school board will pay to travel around the county schools, as needed. BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) -- Raleigh County Circuit Court Judge, Andrew Dimlich sentenced William Pettry, a former firefighter for Coal River Volunteer Fire Department, to spend 37.5 to 130 years in prison during a sentencing hearing on Monday, May 6, 2024. Pettry, 35, pleaded guilty in March to crimes related to sexually assaulting an 11-year-old child and filming the assault. Under the sentencing, Pettry would be eligible for parole after serving 37.5 years. LOOKOUT, WV (WVNS) - A tornado struck Fayette County in April of 2024. Storm clean-up has been in progress in the areas affected by the storm. In response to the damage, dumpsters were dispersed into the damaged areas for clean-up. People affected by the tornado were still in the process of recovering from the severe damage on May 6, 2024.
