Parents of students at Montebello schools are enraged, claiming their children have been bullied and sexually assaulted by classmates while school officials have not done anything to address the problem. Some parents said the issues are a district-wide problem that has affected more children who have yet to come forward. They claim district officials are not properly investigating their troubling claims.  A parent named Emily said her 10-year-old daughter, who attends Washington Elementary, was groped by a classmate and kicked in the groin during two separate incidents in February.  ..read more

Slain man found in riverbed next to Montebello park

A man was found shot to death in a riverbed next to a Montebello park Tuesday afternoon. The man, whose name and age have not been disclosed, was found in the Rio Hondo riverbed behind Grand Rea Park, located at 600 Rea Drive, at about 5:15 p.m., the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said in a news release. The man was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, officials said. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A tornado that descended on Montebello Wednesday morning clocked in at 110 mph, making it the strongest weather event of its kind to impact the Los Angeles metro area in 40 years. A tornado touched down in Montebello on Wednesday, damaging several buildings and leaving a trail of destruction, the National Weather Service confirmed. The rare weather event was reported a few minutes before 11:30 a.m., according to the Verdugo Fire Communications Center. As if Southern California hadn’t already seen enough wild weather since the start of the year, a tornado touched down in Montebello late Wednesday morning, damaging buildings. There were no reports of injuries. The twister was first spotted around 11:30 a.m. in the area of South Vail Street and Washington Boulevard. History was made at Friday’s meeting of the South Coast Air Quality Management District when, for the first time in the governing board’s 47-year history, a Latina assumed the role of chair. Montebello High School and Montebello Area Intermediate School were placed on lockdown Wednesday afternoon as authorities tried to apprehend a murder suspect in the area, authorities said. The suspect was seen running through a residential neighborhood near West Cleveland Avenue and North Concourse Avenue, according to Sky5 reporter Gil Leyvas. Driver in pursuit crashes into, overturns big rig in Montebello

A big rig was left overturned and a driver was hospitalized after an early-morning Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department pursuit in Montebello ended with a crash. The pursuit of a car believed to be stolen out of the Temple City area began at about 3 a.m., according to the LASD.
