BAYONNE, NJ - Less than a year after the city named a park in honor of him and his father, long time member of the Bayonne City Council, and former president of the body, Joseph L. Makowski has died. Although Makowski often clashed with various administrations over policy – most recently the proposal to allow an 18-story residential high rise to be built on Avenue E – he was a well-respected voice in the community. “This park is not being dedicated to you because we are friends,” Mayor Jimmy Davis said at the time. “It’s being dedicated to you because of the work you have done.” Makowski passe ..read more

BAYONNE, NJ - Nearly ten years after selling off its municipal utility assets, Bayonne officials appear poised to establish a new municipal water and wastewater utility. This isn’t going to take back operations that are currently being done by a private vendor, but may give the city more oversight over some of the issues residents are complaining about, such as the constantly increasing fees, Council President Gary LaPelusa said. The city sold operations for sewer and water service more than ten years ago in an effort to alleviate severe financial issues. Since that time, however, many residen ..read more

BAYONNE, NJ - In what has been described as an incident of “swatting,” members of the Bayonne Police Department and other emergency services swarmed to Avenue C between 40th and 41st streets on the report of an active shooting on Wednesday.  Swatting is often the result of someone calling in saying they have heard gun fire and requires police mobilize in force, sometimes leading to school lockdowns. Local officials said this is not the first incident of this kind from the same phone number, leading the police to suspect the validity of the call. But in an active shooter report, police mus ..read more
